Policy, Columbia University\u2019s Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions, Yale University with support from the McCall MacBain Foundation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>First edition:<\/b> It is a <b>biennial index, first started in 2002 <\/b>and was earlier known as the <b>Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) which began in 2002.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides policymakers with an objective scorecard t<strong>o track sustainability progress, identify ecological vulnerabilities, and refine environmental policy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It serves as a<strong> vital analytical tool for measuring how close nations are to achieving global sustainability targets.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2026:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2026 EPI ranks <strong>177 countries<\/strong> on <strong>47 indicators<\/strong><\/span><b> across 12 issue categories <\/b>spanning <b>three policy objectives: <\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecosystem Vitality <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Change<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Global highlights of 2026 Index:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Five European countries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked in the<\/span><b> top five this year in the EPI (2026)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Estonia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed the top spot with <strong>an overall score of 74.79.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following behind, <\/span><b>Luxembourg, United Kingdom, and Finland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were positioned at <strong>second, third and fourth position respectively.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Netherlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> secured the <strong>fifth position.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Germany, France, and Norway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the <strong>sixth, seventh and eight positions.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Sweden <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked <strong>ninth<\/strong> and <\/span><b>Austria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranked <strong>tenth<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>India\u2019s status:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>India ranked second from the bottom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking the <\/span><b>176th position out of 177 evaluated countries.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>India\u2019s overall EPI score came out to 22.46,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to a regional average of 31.81.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tree cover loss in key biodiversity area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s recorded a<\/span><b> score of -3.92.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India\u2019s position in Yale University\u2019s Global Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2026 has been labeled by experts as a stark warning that demands immediate attention.\u00a0 About Environmental Performance Index\u00a0 It is a data-driven global benchmark which provides a comprehensive assessment of sustainability worldwide.
