imprisonment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in prison<strong>, he continued to spread revolutionary ideas<\/strong> among fellow inmates.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As punishment, the British frequently flogged him and transferred him between jails.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his imprisonment at <\/span><b>Mianwali Jail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (now in Punjab, Pakistan), he came into contact with <\/span><b>Bhagat Singh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had a profound influence on his revolutionary outlook.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>14 March 1940<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he assassinated <\/span><b>Michael O&#8217;Dwyer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, at <\/span><b>Caxton Hall, London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in retaliation for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his trial, he adopted the name <\/span><b>&#8220;Ram Mohammad Singh Azad&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to symbolize India&#8217;s religious unity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Execution and death:<\/strong> He was executed by hanging at <\/span><b>Pentonville Prison, London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on <\/span><b>31 July 1940<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His ashes were repatriated to India in <\/span><b>1974<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are preserved at the <\/span><b>Jallianwala Bagh Memorial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Legacy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He is remembered as <\/span><b>&#8220;Shaheed-i-Azam&#8221;
