
{"id":368938,"date":"2026-08-05T15:42:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T10:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=368938"},"modified":"2026-08-05T15:42:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T10:12:01","slug":"clouded-leopard-conservation-action-plan-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/clouded-leopard-conservation-action-plan-cap\/","title":{"rendered":"Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p>News: The Centre has launched a Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP), outlining measures across Northeast India.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wii.gov.in\/uploads\/topics\/17858257936698.png?resize=210%2C356&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Conservation Action Plan for Clouded Leopard \" width=\"210\" height=\"356\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: WII<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>India has launched <strong>Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP) <\/strong>on the occasion of<strong> International Clouded Leopard Day,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective:<\/strong> It has been launched outlining measures <strong>to protect habitats, improve scientific monitoring and strengthen community participation<\/strong> for the conservation of the elusive wild cat across Northeast India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal Ministry:<\/strong> <strong>Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change<\/strong> is nodal ministry for this action plan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preparation:<\/strong> It is prepared under the<strong> India\u2013GEF\u2013UNDP initiative<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Priority Conservation Landscapes:<\/strong> The plan <strong>identifies 14 priority conservation landscapes across the Northeast and proposes landscape-level habitat restoration<\/strong> and corridor conservation to improve connectivity between forest patches.<\/li>\n<li>It also places the <strong>clouded leopard under the Species Recovery Programme of the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH) scheme,<\/strong> providing an institutional framework for long-term conservation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific Monitoring:<\/strong> The action plan <strong>proposes standardised monitoring through camera traps, occupancy surveys, genetic analysis and environmental DNA (eDNA) studies<\/strong> to strengthen scientific assessment of the species.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anti-Poaching and Capacity Building:<\/strong> It also calls for <strong>stronger anti-poaching measures and wildlife crime prevention,<\/strong> alongside capacity building of frontline forest staff through training and the u<strong>se of the M-STrIPES smart application for field monitoring.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Participation:<\/strong> The action plan<strong> promotes community-led conservation and sustainable livelihood initiatives.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It also advocates <strong>greater cooperation with neighbouring range countries<\/strong> to facilitate coordinated conservation efforts across the species\u2019 transboundary habitats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transboundary Cooperation:<\/strong> The strategy <strong>incorporates climate resilience and adaptive management into conservation planning<\/strong> to address the long-term impacts of climate change on clouded leopard habitats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Clouded Leopard<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/image001DI7K.jpg?resize=270%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Clouded Leopard \" width=\"270\" height=\"261\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clouded leopard is a <strong>medium-sized wild cat<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Species classification:<\/strong> <strong>Two distinct<\/strong> species are recognized:\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Mainland Clouded Leopard (<em>Neofelis nebulosa<\/em>)<\/strong>, found <strong>throughout Southeast Asia,<\/strong> and<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Sunda Clouded Leopard (<em>Neofelis diardi<\/em>)<\/strong>, which is native to the i<strong>slands of Sumatra and Borneo.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:\u00a0<\/strong>The preferred habitat of the species is <strong>dense evergreen forest,<\/strong> however they are also inhibit other habitats,<strong> like, scrub, grassland, dry tropical forests, mangrove swamps, hill evergreen forest and mixed deciduous forests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong> is their <strong>main habitat.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u00a0are commonly <strong>found tropical rain forests of Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, China.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is the<strong> state animal of Meghalaya.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They got their name<strong> from the clouds like pattern on their whole body.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have a <strong>darker coat color which has smaller and darker cloud markings on them. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong> fur color includes yellow to brown,<\/strong> which makes them darker.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>can hang upside down from branches of trees<\/strong> by making use of their short limbs, broader paws, and sharp nails.<\/li>\n<li>They have the <strong>longest tail among the cats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> They are <strong>predatory carnivores<\/strong> with a diverse prey base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threat:<\/strong> It faces several threats such as <strong>wildfires, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, illegal poaching, and climate change.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN Status:<\/strong> <strong>Vulnerable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES:<\/strong> Appendix I<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife Protection Act, 1972:<\/strong> Schedule I<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Centre has launched a Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP), outlining measures across Northeast India.
