DTE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Released by:<\/strong> It is released by the <strong>Department of Science and Technology (DST).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Highlights of Research and Development Statistics 2025-26:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Record R&amp;D Expenditure:<\/strong> <strong>India\u2019s Gross Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD)<\/strong> reached \u20b92,44,767.81 crore in 2023-24, which is the <strong>highest level recorded so far.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Higher Share in GDP: GERD increased to 0.84% of GDP <\/strong>in 2023-24, compared with 0.82% in the previous year, and <strong>grew by around 14.7%over 2022-23.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The report <strong>estimates<\/strong> that India\u2019s R&amp;D expenditure will <strong>approach 0.9% of GDP in 2025-26.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Private Sector Leads R&amp;D Spending:<\/strong> The <strong>private sector contributed 51.8% of total R&amp;D expenditure,<\/strong> while the <strong>government contributed 48.2%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Growing Industry Participation:<\/strong> The <strong>private sector\u2019s share increased from 33.8% in 2019-20 to 51.8% in 2023-24<\/strong>, showing greater investment in research, technology development, and innovation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sector-wise Contribution:<\/strong> <strong>Higher education institutions contributed 12.6% of total R&amp;D expenditure<\/strong>, while <strong>public sector enterprises accounted for 4.1%.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>private sector recorded the highest expenditure, followed by the central government sector.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Government Measures to Boost Research and Innovation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Research Funding:<\/strong> The government introduced a <strong>\u20b91 lakh crore <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/research-development-and-innovation-rdi-scheme\/\">Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund<\/a><\/strong> to <strong>support private-sector-led strategic and high-risk research.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Institutions and Missions:<\/strong> The government established <strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/anrf-aimed-at-enhancing-research-in-indias-universities\/\">Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)<\/a><\/strong> and launched major national missions, including the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-quantum-mission-significance-and-challenges-explained-pointwise\/\">National Quantum Mission<\/a>, National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-semiconductor-mission\/\">India Semiconductor Mission<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-super-computing-missionnsm\/\">National Supercomputing Mission<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation and Partnerships:<\/strong> The government <strong>promoted public-private partnerships<\/strong> through technology hubs and supported innovation through National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (<strong>NIDHI<\/strong>), Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (<strong>BIRAC<\/strong>), Innovations for Defence Excellence <strong>(iDEX)<\/strong> and <strong>TIDE 2.0<\/strong> (Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs) programmes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Policy Support:<\/strong> The <strong>Geospatial Policy 2022, Space Policy 2023, and BioE3 Policy 2024<\/strong> aim to increase private sector participation in science, technology, and biotechnology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Department of Science and Technology released the Research and Development Statistics 2025-26, highlighting record R&amp;D expenditure and private-sector leadership.
