Residents often <strong>work on farms<\/strong> and consume plenty of red wine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Okinawa (Japan):<\/strong> Okinawa is home to some of the <strong>world\u2019s oldest women<\/strong>, who eat many <strong>soy-based foods<\/strong> and practice <strong>tai chi<\/strong>. In Ogimi, residents <strong>grow their own food, live with purpose, enjoy leisure, and maintain strong community ties.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica):<\/strong> The Nicoyan diet mainly consists of <strong>beans and corn tortillas<\/strong>. People remain <strong>physically active through work well into old age<\/strong> and follow a strong sense of purpose known as <strong>\u201cplan de vida.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Seventh-day Adventists, Loma Linda (USA):<\/strong> Seventh-day Adventists are a <strong>deeply religious community<\/strong> known for following a <strong>strict vegetarian diet<\/strong> and living in <strong>close-knit communities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Buettner\u2019s book discusses only these areas,<\/span><b> there may be unidentified areas in the world that could also be Blue Zones.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plant-based diet:\u00a0<\/strong>People mostly consume plant-based food, with nearly\u00a0<strong>95% of their diet coming from vegetables<\/strong>, beans, whole grains, nuts, and fruits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited meat and sugar intake: Meat<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>eaten sparingly<\/strong>, about five times a month, while\u00a0<strong>sugar is rarely consumed<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>desserts are occasional.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Natural and local food habits:\u00a0<\/strong>Food is fresh, local, and seasonal, with minimal use of processed or packaged items.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderate eating practice:\u00a0<\/strong>People follow the\u00a0<strong>\u201c80% Rule,<\/strong>\u201d which means they\u00a0<strong>stop eating when they feel about 80% full.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Daily physical activity:\u00a0<\/strong>Physical activity is part of daily life through walking, farming, and household work rather than structured exercise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong sense of purpose:\u00a0<\/strong>Concepts like\u00a0<strong>Ikigai and Plan de Vida<\/strong>\u00a0provide meaning to life and support mental wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong social connections:\u00a0<\/strong>Close family ties and social groups like \u201c<strong>moais<\/strong>\u201d provide emotional and social support, reducing stress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: There are a few known blue zones in the world where people are living longer lives than anywhere else.
