meadows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Characteristics:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Appearance:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a distinctive bird<strong>, known for its colourful plumage<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>T<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are<strong> many color forms of the male Common pheasant,<\/strong> ranging in color from nearly white to almost black in some melanistic examples.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> adult male has a long brown streaked black tail.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> body plumage is barred bright gold or fiery copper-red<\/strong> and<strong> chestnut-brown plumage with iridescent sheen of green and purpl<\/strong>e, but the rump uniform is sometimes blue.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> wing coverage is white or cream and black-barred markings<\/strong> are common on the tail.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>head is bottle green<\/strong> with a <strong>small crest and distinctive red wattle.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Behind the face are two ear-tufts,<\/strong> that make the pheasant more alert.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> female and juveniles are much less showy,<\/strong> with a duller mottled brown plumage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Diet: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside the breeding season,<strong> pheasants are usually solitary or form small groups.<\/strong> In winter, they may gather in larger flocks for safety and in <strong>mixed forests, coniferous forests, scrublands and near forest edges<\/strong> close to human habitations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> It is widely distributed across the western Himalayas, including Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecological role:<\/strong> It plays an essential role in Himalayan ecosystems by <strong>forming a major prey base for melanocephalus.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Local name:<\/strong> It is known as<strong> \u201cdanne geer\u201d in the Kashmiri language<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cratte galla\u201d in Gojri and Pahadi languages.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It has very specific habitat requirements and<strong> depends on undisturbed oak and conifer forests with a dense understorey of shrubs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> In Jammu and Kashmir, the western tragopan is\u00a0found\u00a0in the<strong> Jhelum valley forests of the Kazinag range,<\/strong> the Shamshabari mountains of Kupwara, the southern slopes of the Pir Panjal from Tattakuti Wildlife Sanctuary to the Khara Gali conservation reserve, and parts of the Chenab
