ResearchGate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Zanskar Range<\/strong> is an <strong>important Trans-Himalayan mountain<\/strong> range in Ladakh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> The range is <strong>located mainly in the Kargil and Leh regions of Ladakh<\/strong>, with <strong>extension towards Himachal Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Boundary:<\/strong> It lies <strong>south of the Ladakh Range<\/strong> and <strong>north of the Great Himalayan Range.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Extension:<\/strong> It extends <strong>from the Suru Valley in the northwest<\/strong> to the <strong>Tso Kar basin in the southeast.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Separation:<\/strong> It forms a <strong>natural divide <\/strong>between the <strong>Indus Valley in the north<\/strong> and <strong>the Zanskar Valley in the south.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Geological division:<\/strong> It <strong>belongs to the Tethys Himalaya<\/strong> and mainly <strong>contains folded and thrust sedimentary<\/strong> and <strong>metamorphic rocks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plate convergence:<\/strong> It formed due to the <strong>convergence of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate,<\/strong> which uplifted the Himalayan mountain system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ancient sea:<\/strong> Marine fossils show that the <strong>region was once part of the ancient Tethys Sea.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Climate:<\/strong> It has a <strong>cold desert climate<\/strong>, with <strong>long, extremely cold winters<\/strong>, <strong>short summers and very low rainfall.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Physiography:<\/strong> The range has <strong>barren slopes, deep valleys, steep gorges, glaciers and high-altitude peaks<\/strong>,\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s elevations generally <strong>ranging from 3,500 m to over 7,000 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Peak:<\/strong> <strong>Kamet (7,756 m) in Uttarakhand<\/strong> is the highest peak of the broader Zaskar Range.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Passes:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pensi La Pass:<\/strong> It connects the <strong>Suru Valley of Kargil with the Zanskar Valley<\/strong> and is known as the <strong>gateway to Zanskar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shingo La Pass:<\/strong> It <strong>connects the Zanskar Valley with the Lahaul region<\/strong> of Himachal Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other important passes<\/strong> include <strong>Fotu La, Wakha La, Kanji La, Charchar La, Ruberang La and Taglang La.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Rivers:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/zanskar-river\/\"><strong>Zanskar River<\/strong><\/a> is formed by the <strong>Doda and Lungnak rivers near Padum<\/strong> and <strong>joins the Indus near Nimmu.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Other significant rivers<\/strong> draining the range include the <strong>Khurana River and Suru River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glaciers:<\/strong> The <strong>Drang-Drung Glacier<\/strong>, located near <strong>Pensi La,<\/strong> is one of the <strong>largest glaciers in Ladakh<\/strong> and provides meltwater to the <strong>Zanskar river<\/strong> system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation:<\/strong> Vegetation is <strong>sparse and includes alpine grasses, shrubs, mosses and steppe vegetation adapted to high altitude and aridity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A new study found that glaciers in the Zanskar region of Ladakh are moving more slowly than they did 30 years ago.
