  • The black-necked crane<\/strong> is a\u00a0medium-sized crane<\/strong> in Asia<\/strong>\u00a0that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau<\/strong> and remote parts of India and Bhutan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The species is one of the most significant wetland birds of the Trans-Himalayan region.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Local Names:<\/strong> Locally, the bird is known as \u201ccha thung-thung\u201d in Ladakh<\/strong> and \u201cthungdung karma\u201d<\/strong> in Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat and Distribution<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • It has an estimated world population<\/strong> of roughly 11,000-12,000 individuals<\/strong>, most of which occur on the Tibetan Plateau<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • It is distributed across four range countries – India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • The high altitude wetlands<\/strong> of the\u00a0Tibetan plateau, Sichuan (China), and eastern Ladakh (India)<\/strong>\u00a0are the main breeding ground<\/strong> of the species.<\/li>\n
  • It is also found in Arunachal Pradesh\u2019s valleys – Sangti valley, Zemithang and Chug valley.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • Appearance:<\/strong> It has a largely whitish-grey body<\/strong> contrasted by a jet-black head<\/strong> and upper neck<\/strong>, splashes of red around the eye<\/strong>, and long, elegant legs<\/strong> built for wading through alpine bogs.<\/li>\n
  • It is nearly 1.4 m tall.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Both the sexes<\/strong> are almost of the same size<\/strong>, but male<\/strong> is slightly bigger than female<\/strong>.<\/li>\n

  • Damage to the eggs and chicks<\/strong>, caused by feral dogs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
