<strong>high-altitude wetland oasis<\/strong> in the <strong>cold desert of Ladakh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located in<strong> Hanle village in Ladakh,<\/strong> near the <strong>border with China<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hanle Valley<\/strong> falls within the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/changthang-cold-desert-wildlife-sanctuary-2\/\"><strong>Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>River associated with:<\/strong> It is a complex of fast flowing streams, stagnant pools, saline marshes, seasonally flooded marshes<strong>,<\/strong> and bogs along the <strong>Hanle river.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These wetlands are <strong>frozen from November to April<\/strong> and are fed by <strong>snowmelt in summer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation:<\/strong> The <strong>marshes, grasslands and steppes<\/strong> support vegetation such as <strong>forbs and hardy grasses, <\/strong>including<strong> Krascheninnikovia ceratoides, <\/strong>locally known as<strong> &#8216;gyab-shen&#8217;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong> The freshwater pools shelter species such as<strong> Hydrilla, Myriophyllum, Potamogeton, and an edible aquatic lichen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> It provides a vital refuge for wildlife, including the <strong>endangered <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=369529&amp;preview=true\">Black-necked Crane<\/a>, elusive Pallas\u2019s cat, and the rare <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-hundred-tibetan-gazelles\/\">Tibetan gazelle<\/a>.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It also offers <strong>moist soil and habitats suitable<\/strong> for small burrowing mammals like <strong>marmots and pikas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Tso Kar<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> It is a<strong> high altitude wetland<\/strong> situated in the<strong> Changthang region of Ladakh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It consists of <strong>two connected lakes<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Startsapuk Tso<\/strong> (a <strong>freshwater<\/strong> lake of about 438 hectares to the south) and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tso Kar (<\/strong>a <strong>hypersaline<\/strong> lake of 1800 hectares to the north).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Named after: <\/strong>It is called<strong> Tso Kar, meaning white lake<\/strong>, because of the white <strong>salt efflorescence<\/strong> found on the margins due to the <strong>evaporation<\/strong> of highly saline water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> Numerous threatened species inhabit this wetland<strong>, <\/strong>including the<strong> endangered saker falcon <\/strong>and<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/asiatic-wild-dog-cuon-alpinus\/\"> Asiatic wild dog or dhole<\/a>, and the vulnerable snow leopard.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognition: <\/strong>It was designated a <strong>Ramsar site in 2020.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Tso Kar Basin is an A1 Category Important Bird Area (IBA)<\/strong> as per Bird Life International and a key staging site in the <strong>Central Asian Flyway.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important Breeding Ground:<\/strong> The site is one of the most important breeding areas of the<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=369529&amp;preview=true\"><strong> Black-necked Crane <\/strong><\/a>in India<strong>.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also the <strong>major breeding area<\/strong> for <strong>Great Crested Grebe Bar-headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Brown-headed Gull, Lesser Sand-Plover, and many other
