The uprising quickly spread to other naval bases across British India and became known as the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About Royal Indian Navy Mutiny of 1946<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent.fdel1-5.fna.fbcdn.net\/v\/t1.6435-9\/89435646_3062819003777768_3311143627408801792_n.png?stp=dst-jpg_tt6&amp;cstp=mx759x571&amp;ctp=p180x540&amp;_nc_cat=106&amp;_nc_map=urlgen_bucketless&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=127cfc&amp;_nc_ohc=rBO7wP_GI2kQ7kNvwFvbu_o&amp;_nc_oc=AdqVJQlV3d2pKJT3kZWxdhbSorgDGsHK_kmhOMKOBlnUmw2n8b-YIIIjr_5NBjAs67xh1_fNZ42OsS6QdzcYr2na&amp;_nc_zt=23&amp;_nc_ht=scontent.fdel1-5.fna&amp;_nc_gid=NFsr0S5zCvSscihZxRgo0A&amp;_nc_ss=7b289&amp;oh=00_AQHPQDiY8fWoZtnD1esawrtC-pxBofeVCLFOV4Zxqicxpg&amp;oe=6AAA51A0\" alt=\"Royal Indian Navy Uprising of 1946\" width=\"417\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: PMO India : Report Card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Background<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Indian Navy (RIN) was<\/span><b> established in 1934<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a small naval force.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Second World War,<\/span><b> the strength of the Navy increased from fewer than 2,000 personnel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to nearly 30,000 personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the war,<\/span><b> Indian sailors expected recognition, better employment opportunities, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and improved treatment for their services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <strong>the British government planned<\/strong> to reduce the Navy <strong>to around 11,000 personnel after the war.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decision created frustration, insecurity, and a sense of loss of status among the sailors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Causes of the Mutiny<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Indian sailors were unhappy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because <\/span><b>they faced racial discrimination and unequal treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from British officers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They complained<\/span><b> about poor-quality food and inadequate living conditions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also<\/span><b> demanded better pay and equal treatment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compared with British sailors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> trials of Indian National Army (INA) soldiers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increased nationalist and anti-British feelings among the sailors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several smaller incidents of unrest had already taken place in the Royal Indian Navy between 1942 and 1945.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Immediate Cause of the Mutiny<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediate events leading to the mutiny took place at<strong> HMIS Talwar, a naval training<\/strong> establishment in Bombay. Sailors had written slogans like <strong>\u201cQuit India\u201d and \u201cDown with the British\u201d<\/strong> to express their anger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Commander Arthur Frederick King<\/strong> insulted the Indian sailors, reportedly<strong> calling them \u201csons of coolies.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sailors<strong> complained about his behaviour,<\/strong> but King refused to properly address their complaint, increasing their anger.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>On February 18, 1946, the sailors went on strike, marking the beginning of the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Spread of the Mutiny<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mutiny spread rapidly because <strong>many protesting sailors worked in the Navy\u2019s communication branch<\/strong> and<strong> used wireless messages to inform other naval bases.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <strong>spread from Bombay to Karachi, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Jamnagar, and other naval centres.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About<strong> 78 ships and 20 shore establishments joined the strike<\/strong>, involving nearly 20,000 naval personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<strong> sailors formed a Naval Strike Committee<\/strong> to lead the movement, removed British flags, and displayed Congress and Muslim League flags.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also identified <strong>themselves with the Indian National Navy and the Azad Hind movement.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demands of the Sailors<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Disciplinary action against Commander King<\/strong> for insulting behaviour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Better-quality food<\/strong> and improved living conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Equal pay and allowances<\/strong> with British sailors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fair employment opportunities<\/strong> after leaving the Navy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Protection from punishment<\/strong> for participating in the strike<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Access to military canteens<\/strong> previously restricted to British personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Withdrawal of British forces<\/strong> from Indonesia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fair treatment and trials<\/strong> for Indian National Army prisoners.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support from the Public<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>mutiny received strong support from sections of the Indian public,<\/strong> especially in Bombay.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protests spread to<strong> other cities, including Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Madras, and Visakhapatnam.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dock workers, mill workers, railway workers, students, and other groups<\/strong> joined the protests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Public transport was disrupted,<\/strong> and many shops and businesses were closed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local citizens also provided food to the protesting sailors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>British Response<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British authorities responded<strong> to the mutiny with military and police force.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Police firing<\/strong> took place on February 22, 1946, and resulted in hundreds of deaths and many injuries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the<strong> people killed during the violence<\/strong> were civilians rather than naval personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some sections of the<strong> Royal Indian Air Force and the Indian Army also showed signs of unrest or reluctance<\/strong> to suppress the movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance of the Mutiny<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mutiny, along with the activities and trials of the Indian National Army, <strong>increased pressure on the British government<\/strong> to leave India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many historians believe t<strong>hat the naval mutiny helped accelerate the process of Indian independence.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, <strong>the uprising is
