Ambedkar <\/strong>supported<strong> separate electorates for\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>Depressed Classes <\/strong>because he believed that <strong>Dalits needed their own political representatives<\/strong> to protect their <strong>interests<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Ambedkar believed that upper-caste leaders could not adequately represent the interests of Dalits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong> strongly <strong>opposed<\/strong> separate electorates for the Depressed Classes because he believed they would <strong>divide Hindu society permanently<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Gandhi argued that the <strong>problem of untouchability<\/strong> should be solved through <strong>social reform and unity<\/strong>, rather than through separate political representation.<\/li>\n<li>Gandhi announced that he would undertake a <strong>fast unto death<\/strong> if separate electorates for the Depressed Classes were not withdrawn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gandhi began his fast on 20 September 1932 in Poona.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>disagreement<\/strong> between <strong>Gandhi and Ambedkar<\/strong> created a major political conflict over the political rights and representation of Dalits.<\/li>\n<li>After negotiations, <strong>Gandhi and Ambedkar signed the Poona Pact on 24 September 1932.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the Poona Pact, <strong>separate electorates for the Depressed Classes were abandoned.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Instead, the Depressed Classes were given <strong>reserved seats within joint electorates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The number of <strong>reserved seats<\/strong> for the Depressed Classes in <strong>provincial<\/strong> legislatures was <strong>increased from 71 to 148.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Poona Pact became a <strong>compromise<\/strong> between <strong>Gandhi&#8217;s demand for Hindu political unity and Ambedkar&#8217;s demand for greater political representation for Dalits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:\u00a0In August 1936, the British announced the Communal Award.
