University of Texas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Detonation<\/strong> is a <strong>combustion process <\/strong>in which the<strong> flame travels through the fuel mixture faster than the speed of sound<\/strong>, unlike <strong>conventional<\/strong> combustion where the <strong>flame travels slower than the speed of sound<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Type of Detonation:<\/strong> Detonation engines can be <strong>Pulsed Detonation Engines (PDEs)<\/strong> or <strong>Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pulsed Detonation Engine (PDE):<\/strong> The detonation <strong>travels through a long tube and works in repeated cycles.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The tube is purged before the next cycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE):<\/strong> The detonation wave <strong>moves continuously in a circular path inside an annular chamber<\/strong>, so <strong>combustion<\/strong> can <strong>continue as long as fuel is supplied.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Working Mechanism of RDE:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fuel and oxidizer<\/strong> are continuously<strong> injected<\/strong> into the narrow, ring-shaped chamber called<strong> &#8216;annulus&#8217;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>detonation wave moves around the annulus at very high speed<\/strong> and <strong>rapidly compresses<\/strong> and <strong>burns<\/strong> the fresh <strong>fuel-air mixture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The wave <strong>consumes the mixture and produces high-pressure, high-temperature gases.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuous fuel injection keeps the detonation going.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The combustion products are <strong>expelled through the nozzle<\/strong>, <strong>generating continuous thrust or mechanical energy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features of RDE:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Higher Efficiency:<\/strong> RDEs can <strong>provide around 10%\u201325% higher thermodynamic efficiency<\/strong> than conventional combustors, depending on design and conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fuel Saving:<\/strong> A <strong>20% increase in thermodynamic efficiency<\/strong> could theoretically <strong>reduce fuel requirement by about 17%<\/strong> for the same output.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compact Design:<\/strong> <strong>RDE combustors can be at least 40% shorter than standard rocket engines<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Propellant Flexibility:<\/strong> RDEs have been <strong>demonstrated with hypergolic and cryogenic propellants.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wide Applications: <\/strong>RDEs can be used for <strong>chemical propulsion, including rocket launches, in-space propulsion, and missions involving spacecraft such as upper stages, landers and Mars Ascent Vehicles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current Status: <\/strong>RDEs remain in the <strong>research and development stage,<\/strong> with <strong>no known models ready for commercial or military use.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Progress:<\/strong> India-based <strong>defence start-up D-Propulse<\/strong> has successfully <strong>demonstrated an RDE at a DRDO facility in Hyderabad.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India-based defence start-up D-Propulse successfully demonstrated a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) at a Defence Research &amp;
