DD News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>This <strong>Guide<\/strong> is a <strong>national reference document<\/strong> that <strong>highlights the diversity, ecological significance<\/strong> and <strong>socio-economic importance of India\u2019s grasslands and other open natural ecosystems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched At:<\/strong> It was launched at the <strong>17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17)<\/strong> to the <strong>United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)<\/strong> in <strong>Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Institutional Collaborators:<\/strong> The Guide was <strong>developed under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)<\/strong> with partners including the <strong>Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE)<\/strong> and the <strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It aims to strengthen the<strong> conservation, restoration and sustainable management <\/strong>of India\u2019s <strong>grasslands<\/strong> and other open natural ecosystems <strong>(ONEs) <\/strong>through science-based approaches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grasslands:<\/strong> Grasslands are <strong>dominated by grasses,<\/strong> support a wide variety of <strong>animal life<\/strong> and provide <strong>ecosystem services <\/strong>such as water and carbon storage, chemical recycling and climate regulation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Natural Ecosystems (ONEs):<\/strong> ONEs include <strong>naturally occurring, open landscape, such as grasslands, Savannas, deserts, scrubland, ravines, rocky plateaus, coastal ecosystems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features of Guide:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Information:<\/strong> The Guide brings together <strong>information on major Open Natural Ecosystems across India,<\/strong> including <strong>their geographical settings, ecological characteristics, biodiversity, and associated communities and tribes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecosystems Covered:<\/strong> It covers <strong>Himalayan and Terai grasslands, the Thar and Banni landscapes, Deccan savannas, rocky plateaus, ravines, scrublands, coastal ecosystems and desert landscapes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thematic Sections:<\/strong> The Guide contains <strong>dedicated sections on pastoralism, fire ecology and carbon sequestration.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Correction of the \u201cWasteland\u201d Perception: <\/strong>The Guide highlights that <strong>grasslands, scrublands and ravines should not be undervalued due to the absence of trees.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Science-based Conservation:<\/strong> It highlights the <strong>need for stronger scientific knowledge<\/strong>, <strong>improved assessments of land degradation and comprehensive landscape-level planning<\/strong> for the conservation and restoration of ONEs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valuable Resource:<\/strong> The Guide will <strong>serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, conservation practitioners, development agencies and communities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Recently, India launched its first-ever Guide to Grasslands and Other Open Natural Ecosystems at UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
