Max Healthcare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"429\"><strong>H1N1<\/strong> is an <strong>Influenza A virus<\/strong> subtype that <strong>causes an acute respiratory infection<\/strong> commonly known as <strong>swine flu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"491\"><strong>Family: <\/strong>It belongs to <strong>the Orthomyxoviridae family.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"582\"><strong>Type:<\/strong> It belongs to <strong>Influenza A,<\/strong> one of the <strong>four influenza types: A, B, C and D.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Genome:<\/strong> It has a <strong>single-stranded, negative-sense ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Naming:<\/strong> H1N1 refers <strong>to Hemagglutinin 1 (H1)<\/strong> and <strong>Neuraminidase 1 (N1),<\/strong> which are <strong>two surface proteins<\/strong> used to <strong>classify Influenza A virus subtypes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Common symptoms include <strong>fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle and joint pain, runny nose, chills, sweating and severe tiredness<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\">Some people may also <strong>experience vomiting or diarrhoea.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Transmission:<\/strong> It mainly <strong>spreads through respiratory droplets released during coughing and sneezing.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\">Infection can also <strong>occur after touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth or nose.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Incubation Period:<\/strong> Symptoms generally <strong>appear about two days after infection,<\/strong> although the incubation period <strong>can range from one to four days.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>High-Risk Groups:<\/strong> <strong>Pregnant women, children below five years, adults aged 65 years and above<\/strong>, and people with <strong>chronic diseases or weakened immunity<\/strong> face a higher risk of severe illness.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Prevention:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Precautions:<\/strong> Regular <strong>handwashing<\/strong>, proper <strong>disposal of tissues, covering the mouth and nose<\/strong> while coughing or sneezing, and <strong>avoiding unnecessary contact<\/strong> with infected people can reduce transmission.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Isolation:<\/strong> Isolation can help limit transmission, particularly during the infectious period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Treatment:<\/strong> Treatment is mainly <strong>symptomatic, <\/strong>and<strong> antibiotics do not work.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Oseltamivir is an antiviral that works<\/strong> when <strong>treatment starts early,<\/strong> while <strong>paracetamol can control fever.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vaccination:<\/strong> <strong>Annual vaccination is recommended<\/strong> because <strong>circulating influenza strains change frequently<\/strong> and the vaccine is updated accordingly.\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>quadrivalent vaccine is available,<\/strong> and in <strong>India it is sold as Influvac Tetra 2024\/2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Diagnostic Test:<\/strong> Laboratory testing of <strong>respiratory samples can confirm infection.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"672\"><strong>Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)<\/strong> can detect influenza-specific RNA and <strong>generally has better sensitivity than rapid diagnostic tests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Delhi recorded 1,777 confirmed H1N1 cases till August 20, with several hospitals reporting a surge over the past two weeks.
