In this context, floating solar offers a land-saving alternative, and the PM Surya Sarovar Yojana aims to accelerate its large-scale adoption across India.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>About Floating solar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>It refers to solar panels mounted on floating platforms placed on water bodies such as <strong>reservoirs, lakes and industrial ponds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The platforms are anchored to the reservoir bed or banks, and the electricity generated is transmitted to the shore through cables.<\/li>\n<li>With increasing land constraints for solar projects, floating solar can help India expand renewable <strong>energy capacity without requiring additional land.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Significance for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Land conservation:<\/strong> It avoids competition for land with agriculture, urbanisation and ecological conservation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large potential:<\/strong> India\u2019s floating solar potential is estimated at <strong>102 GW<\/strong>, considering only 20% usage of reservoir areas, while current installed capacity is only about <strong>700 MW<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water conservation:<\/strong> Solar panels can reduce evaporation from covered portions of water bodies, although the extent depends on local conditions and reservoir characteristics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Higher efficiency:<\/strong> Water beneath the panels helps keep them cooler, improving their performance, particularly during hot summers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean energy:<\/strong> It provides an additional source of renewable electricity and can complement ground-mounted and rooftop solar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Existing experience:<\/strong> The <strong>100 MW Ramagundam project<\/strong> in Telangana and <strong>92 MW Kayamkulam project<\/strong> in Kerala were commissioned in 2022. The planned <strong>600 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park<\/strong> in Madhya Pradesh is another major project.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>About PM Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>PM-SSY is the <strong>first dedicated national initiative<\/strong> aimed at scaling up floating solar in India.<\/li>\n<li>It targets <strong>5,000 MW of floating solar capacity<\/strong> with a total outlay of <strong>\u20b95,070 crore<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It also supports co-located energy storage with a minimum storage capacity of <strong>2 hours<\/strong>, amounting to <strong>10,000 MWh<\/strong> of cumulative storage capacity.<\/li>\n<li>It provides <strong>\u20b91 crore per MW<\/strong> as central financial assistance for eligible projects upon commissioning.<\/li>\n<li>Up to <strong>\u20b90.5 crore per project<\/strong> is available for feasibility and preparatory activities such as hydrographic and environmental assessments.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme can also promote <strong>domestic manufacturing and employment<\/strong> across the floating solar value chain.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>High costs:<\/strong> Floating solar is more expensive than ground-mounted solar due to floating platforms, anchoring systems, specialised equipment and installation costs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storage costs:<\/strong> Addition of energy storage systems can further increase capital requirements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate risks:<\/strong> Strong winds, waves and changing water levels require climate-resilient designs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecological concerns:<\/strong> Poorly planned projects may affect aquatic life, water quality, biodiversity, bird habitats and fisheries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Site selection:<\/strong> Suitable water bodies require detailed feasibility studies, hydrographic assessments and environmental assessments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Institutional coordination:<\/strong> Multiple agencies, including water resources departments, electricity utilities, environmental authorities, municipal bodies and industries, may be involved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial viability:<\/strong> Developers require affordable financing and clear revenue streams through long-term power purchase agreements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulatory complexity:<\/strong> Lack of clear frameworks for identifying water bodies, allocating them and defining institutional responsibilities can delay projects.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Scientific site selection:<\/strong> Identify suitable water bodies through comprehensive hydrographic and environmental assessments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecological safeguards:<\/strong> Exclude ecologically sensitive areas and locations important for biodiversity, birds and fisheries unless thorough assessments establish their suitability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate-resilient design:<\/strong> Develop systems capable of withstanding extreme winds, waves and fluctuating water levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affordable financing:<\/strong> Improve access to low-cost finance and ensure bankable projects with predictable revenue streams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Streamline approvals:<\/strong> Establish clear frameworks for water-body allocation and institutional responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen coordination:<\/strong> Improve coordination among state agencies, utilities, water and irrigation departments, environmental authorities and other stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote domestic manufacturing:<\/strong> Use the expansion of floating solar to strengthen the domestic supply chain and generate employment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integrate storage:<\/strong> Develop floating solar along with suitable energy storage to improve grid stability.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion: <\/strong>Floating solar can become an important <strong>complement to ground-mounted and rooftop solar<\/strong>, helping India expand renewable capacity while reducing pressure on scarce land.\u00a0 <strong>PM-SSY provides the policy and financial push<\/strong>, but its success will depend on environmentally responsible site selection, climate-resilient designs, affordable financing and effective institutional coordination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong>What is floating solar technology?
