{"id":370474,"date":"2026-08-27T15:15:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T09:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=370474"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:15:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T09:45:30","slug":"waterspouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/waterspouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Waterspouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>News:<\/strong> Waterspouts were recently spotted over the Brahmaputra River in Assam&#8217;s Barpeta.<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">About Waterspouts<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_370483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-370483\" style=\"width: 381px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-370483\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Source-USA-Today.jpg?resize=381%2C272&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Waterspouts\" width=\"381\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Source-USA-Today.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Source-USA-Today.jpg?w=754&amp;ssl=1 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-370483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; USA Today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a <strong>rotating column of air and mist forming a funnel over a body of water.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are <strong>associated with severe thunderstorms,<\/strong> and are<strong> often accompanied by high winds and seas<\/strong>, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classification:<\/strong> They are divided into <strong>two main types &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong data-start=\"45\" data-end=\"69\">tornadic waterspouts<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"74\" data-end=\"102\">fair-weather waterspouts<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"129\">Tornadic waterspouts<\/strong> are tornadoes that <strong>form over water<\/strong> or <strong>move from land onto water.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are linked to <strong>severe thunderstorms<\/strong> and can bring strong <strong>winds, high waves, large hail, and dangerous lightning<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"313\" data-end=\"341\">Fair-weather waterspouts<\/strong> usually form under developing <strong>cumulus clouds.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are <strong>not normally connected to thunderstorms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike tornadic waterspouts, they <strong>begin at the surface of the water and move upward.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They usually form in <strong>light winds<\/strong>, so they tend to <strong>move very slowly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stages of formation:<\/strong> <strong>Five stages of waterspout formation has been identified<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong data-start=\"117\" data-end=\"131\">Dark Spot:<\/strong> A light-coloured circular area appears on the water, surrounded by a larger dark area.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"223\" data-end=\"242\">Spiral Pattern:<\/strong> Light and dark bands begin to spiral outward from a dark spot on the water.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"338\">Spray Ring:<\/strong> A spinning ring of sea spray forms around the dark area, making it look like the eye of a hurricane.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"462\">Mature Vortex:<\/strong> The waterspout becomes fully developed, extending from the water to the clouds above. It reaches its greatest strength and may create a visible trail and waves on the water.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"641\" data-end=\"651\">Decay:<\/strong> The waterspout weakens and disappears as the flow of warm air into the vortex decreases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They have the<strong> same characteristics as a land tornado.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is generally<strong> less intense and usually lasts about five minutes. I<\/strong>t can sometimes<strong> continue for up to 10 minutes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>An average waterspout is approximately<strong> 165 feet in diameter<\/strong> and can have wind speeds of <strong>around 100 kilometres per hour.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They<strong> typically form when humidity levels are high<\/strong> and<strong> the water is relatively warm compared with the cooler air<\/strong> above it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Waterspouts were recently spotted over the Brahmaputra River in Assam&#8217;s Barpeta.
