Context:<\/strong> Central Asia is an important part of India\u2019s extended neighbourhood, despite the lack of direct overland connectivity. India shares deep civilisational, cultural, religious, linguistic and architectural links<\/strong> with the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s upcoming visit to Uzbekistan<\/strong> and participation in the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan<\/strong>, reflect India\u2019s renewed focus on Central Asia.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Engagement with Central Asia<\/strong><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. 2015:<\/strong> Prime Minister Modi\u2019s visit to all five Central Asian countries marked a historic shift from India\u2019s earlier policy of largely deferring to Russia in its neighbourhood.<\/li>\n
  2. 2017:<\/strong> India became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. 2022:<\/strong> India invited all Central Asian leaders as chief guests for Republic Day to mark 30 years of their independence and diplomatic ties.                           Importance of the SCO<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                          1. The SCO originated from the Shanghai Five in 1996<\/strong> and has expanded to 10 members, 15 dialogue partners and 2 observers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                          2. India\u2019s engagement with the SCO is driven mainly by geography rather than ideology<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
