It is no longer considered realistic to prevent this from happening.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Limiting Peak Warming Is Now the Priority:<\/strong> Since crossing 1.5\u00b0C is becoming unavoidable, the priority should be to <strong>limit how high temperatures rise<\/strong> and reduce the amount of time the world remains above 1.5\u00b0C.\n<ul>\n<li>Every delay in reducing emissions increases the peak temperature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Warming Could Reach 1.8\u00b0C or Higher:<\/strong> Under the most ambitious climate action scenario, global warming could peak at around <strong>1.8\u00b0C<\/strong> in the middle of the century.\n<ul>\n<li>Under current government policies, warming could reach around <strong>2.6\u00b0C by 2100<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The World Needs an \u201cOvershoot\u201d Pathway:<\/strong> The report proposes a pathway in which temperatures first <strong>cross 1.5\u00b0C, reach a peak, and then gradually decline<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The aim is eventually to return global warming to below 1.5\u00b0C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Rapid Reduction in Fossil Fuel Use Is Essential:<\/strong> Returning temperatures below 1.5\u00b0C would require <strong>ending the use of fossil fuels<\/strong> and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.\n<ul>\n<li>The report also highlights the need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Carbon Removal Has an Important but Limited Role:<\/strong> The report identifies <strong>carbon dioxide removal (CDR)<\/strong> as an important part of the long-term cooling pathway.\n<ul>\n<li>However, carbon removal cannot substitute for rapid emissions reductions and faces challenges related to cost and reliability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Climate Impacts Will Continue During the Overshoot Period:<\/strong> The period of warming above 1.5\u00b0C could last for <strong>many decades<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>During this time, climate-related disasters are expected to increase, including extreme weather, food and water shortages, health impacts, economic losses and species extinction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Adaptation and Resilience Are Necessary:<\/strong> Governments must strengthen <strong>climate adaptation and resilience<\/strong>, because some impacts of higher temperatures cannot be avoided.\n<ul>\n<li>Poor and vulnerable communities are expected to be affected the most.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Risk of Irreversible Climate Tipping Points:<\/strong> Higher warming increases the risk of <strong>irreversible tipping points<\/strong>, including the loss of parts of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, damage to the Amazon rainforest and disruption of Atlantic Ocean circulation.\n<ul>\n<li>Some areas could eventually become difficult to insure or even uninhabitable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Immediate Action Can Still Reduce Damage:<\/strong> Although crossing 1.5\u00b0C is increasingly unavoidable, the report stresses that <strong>climate action is still valuable<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Acting now can r<strong>educe peak warming and make the future safer<\/strong> than allowing temperatures to remain above 1.5\u00b0C for the long term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The \u2018Limiting Overshoot\u2019 Report has been released by UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
