{"id":371210,"date":"2026-09-07T12:35:32","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T07:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=371210"},"modified":"2026-09-07T12:35:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-07T07:05:32","slug":"osbeckia-ulotricha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/osbeckia-ulotricha\/","title":{"rendered":"Osbeckia ulotricha"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p class=\"arr--story--headline-h1 story-headline-m_headline__x10-O story-headline-m_dark__1_kPz\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"story-headline\"><strong>News:<\/strong> Botanists recently identified a new woolly-haired flowering plant, Osbeckia ulotricha, in the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">About Osbeckia ulotricha<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cf-images.assettype.com\/downtoearth%2F2026-09-03%2F9iwtxfh2%2Fimg41.jpg?resize=341%2C246&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Osbeckia ulotricha\" width=\"341\" height=\"246\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: DTE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Osbeckia ulotricha is a <strong>flowering plant<\/strong> growing in the<strong> shola grasslands of the Western Ghats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Family:<\/strong> It belongs to the <strong>Melastomataceae family.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> It is <strong>endemic<\/strong> to the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/agasthyamalai-biosphere-reserve\/\"> Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It grows mainly in the <strong>damp margins of Tropical Montane Wet Temperate Forest (shola) and Montane Temperate Grassland ecosystems.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It occurs at elevations of <strong>1,200 m &#8211; 1,500 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Flowering month:<\/strong> The species <strong>flowers and fruits between February and May.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has an<strong> urn-shaped hypanthium (a cup-like flower base) with a neck.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It also has a <strong>sub-globose hypanthium (or an almost round flower base) and <\/strong><strong>an ovary <\/strong>crowned with true bristles, meaning fine, stiff hairs at the top.<\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>leaves are clustered at the apex.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> The only known<strong>\u00a0<em>Osbeckia<\/em>\u00a0with stylar hairs<\/strong> is a variety of\u00a0<strong><em>O. stellata<\/em>,<\/strong> distributed in the <strong>Himalayas, China and Indo-China,<\/strong> and belonging to the<strong> section\u00a0<em>Ceramicalyx<\/em>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong> The species has been assessed as<strong> Data Deficient<\/strong> under <strong>IUCN<\/strong> categories and criteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Botanists recently identified a new woolly-haired flowering plant, Osbeckia ulotricha, in the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.
