Cleveland Clinic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rabies<\/strong> is a\u00a0<strong>zoonotic viral<\/strong> disease that affects the <strong>central nervous system.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cause:<\/strong> Rabies is caused by the <strong>Rabies virus (RABV)<\/strong>, an <strong>RNA virus<\/strong> <strong>present in the saliva of infected animals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> Initial symptoms include <strong>fever, pain and unusual tingling, pricking or burning at the wound site.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Later, <strong>furious or paralytic rabies may occur.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission:<\/strong> It spreads through the <strong>saliva of infected animals<\/strong>, usually <strong>through bites, scratches or contact with mucosa or open wounds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Incubation Period:<\/strong> The incubation period is <strong>usually 2\u20133 months,<\/strong> but it may <strong>range from one week to one year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Immediate <strong>wound washing with soap and water<\/strong>, followed by <strong>timely post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP),<\/strong> helps prevent rabies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment: Dog vaccination stops transmission at source<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>There is <strong>no cure once clinical symptoms appear.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\">WHO&#8217;s Criteria for Validation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>WHO validation recognises that a<strong> country has eliminated dog-transmitted human rabies<\/strong> and consequently <strong>through the absence of human deaths<\/strong> from the <strong>disease for at least two years<\/strong>, while <strong>demonstrating the capacity to prevent transmission from re-emerging<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>two-pronged strategy<\/strong> is advocated globally \u2014\n<ul>\n<li><strong>vaccinating dogs<\/strong> to curb the disease at source and\u00a0 <strong>using post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after a bite<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PEP<\/strong> consists of <strong>thoroughly washing the bite area<\/strong> with <strong>water and soap<\/strong>, administering a <strong>full course of human rabies vaccine<\/strong>, and whenever necessary, <strong>rabies immunoglobulins<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\">About National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP)<\/strong> was <strong>approved in 2013 during the 12th Five Year Plan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Type:<\/strong> NRCP is a <strong>Central Sector Scheme <\/strong>under the umbrella of<strong> NHM <\/strong>(National Health Mission).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal Agency:<\/strong> The <strong>National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)<\/strong> implements the human health component.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>To <strong>reduce mortality due to Rabies<\/strong> among human beings and progressively <strong>achieve the Global Target of reducing deaths due to Rabies to \u201cZero by the year 2030\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong> <strong>Since 2019\u201320<\/strong>, <strong>State and District human-health activities<\/strong> are funded <strong>through the National Health Mission\u2019s planning and implementation mechanism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Two Components:<\/strong> NRCP has both <strong>human health and animal health components.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Human Health Component:<\/strong> It is implemented in <strong>all States and UTs by the National Centre for Disease Control.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Animal Health Component:<\/strong> It is being <strong>pilot tested in Haryana and Chennai under the Animal Welfare Board of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Capacity Building:<\/strong> The programme <strong>provides training to healthcare professionals on animal-bite management and rabies PEP.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Surveillance and Awareness:<\/strong> It strengthens <strong>rabies surveillance, laboratory diagnosis and community awareness<\/strong> through communication and social mobilization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Bhutan has become the first WHO Southeast Asia region country to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies as a public health problem.
