font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; margin: 0px; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 0px rgb(10, 10, 10);\">Northern Goshawk <\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is the <strong>largest species <\/strong>of <strong>true accipiter hawk.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is <strong>Accipiter gentilis.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It inhabits <strong>mature forests, <\/strong>particularly<strong> coniferous woodlands, and <\/strong>favors areas near <strong>clearings and forest edges.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution: <\/strong>It is found across large parts of <strong>Europe and Asia, <\/strong>as well as in some regions of <strong>North America.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distribution in India: <\/strong>There is <strong>no recorded sighting of the Northern Goshawk in present-day Punjab or Haryana.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The closest sightings are<strong> in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0locally known as\u00a0<strong>Baaz or Baaj.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance in India: It is a state bird of Punjab.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is associated with <strong>Guru Gobind Singh<\/strong>, who is <strong>traditionally depicted with a hawk.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The bird represents <strong>freedom, courage, sovereignty and the warrior spirit of the Khalsa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It is a stocky hawk<\/strong> with<strong> a broad body, short wedge-shaped tail,<\/strong> and <strong>long, rounded wings.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The neck, breast, belly, sides, and underwings are <strong>covered with dense gray bars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Adults have a <strong>dark crown<\/strong>, <strong>slate-gray back and wings, and a noticeable speckled eyebrow<\/strong> behind the<strong> bright red eye.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Juveniles have <strong>golden eyes<\/strong> and mottled brown feathers on the head, back, and wings.<\/li>\n<li>Their underside is <strong>buff-colored with heavy dark streaks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>At all ages, the underside of the tail has <strong>thick black-and-white bands<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> It prey upon <strong>medium-sized, ground-dwelling birds and mammals<\/strong> as large as hares.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> They <strong>forage low in deep woodlands,<\/strong> and <strong>hunt birds in ambush attacks<\/strong>, either in mid-air or from their perches.\n<ul>\n<li>They <strong>fly low and fast while searching for prey.<\/strong> They chase smaller birds and<strong> kill them mid-air with their talons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Migration:<\/strong> These hawks are <strong>partial migrants<\/strong>, usually migrating from <strong>September to November<\/strong> and returning from <strong>February to April<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>active during the day<\/strong> and are usually seen <strong>alone or in pairs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>highly territorial<\/strong> and defend their home ranges through <strong>display flights<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threat: <\/strong>The main threat is the <strong>loss and degradation of mature and old-growth forest habitats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN Red List: Least Concern (LC)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Punjab made two unsuccessful attempts, seven years apart (2018 and 2025), to locate its State Bird, the Northern Goshawk within the state.
