World Atlas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tibetan Plateau<\/strong> is a <strong>vast, high-elevation plateau in Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Names:<\/strong> It is called the \u201c<strong>Roof of the World<\/strong>\u201d and <strong>Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location and extension:<\/strong> It lies in <strong>southwestern China.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It lies between the <strong>Kunlun Mountains in the north<\/strong> and the <strong>Himalayas in the south<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>It extends from the<strong> Pamir Plateau <\/strong>in the west to the eastern highlands near the<strong> Loess Plateau.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plate Collision:<\/strong> Around 45 million years ago, the northward-moving <strong>Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate,<\/strong> causing intense <strong>compression of the Earth\u2019s crust.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Crustal Deformation and Uplift:<\/strong> The collision led to folding, faulting and thickening of the crust, which caused the <strong>land to rise to great heights.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation and Continued Uplift:<\/strong> This process resulted in the <strong>formation of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>plateau is still slowly rising<\/strong>, although its rate of expansion has reduced over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Climate:<\/strong> High altitude causes <strong>cold and dry conditions<\/strong>, with very <strong>cold winters and short cool summers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Relief:<\/strong> It has <strong>high plains, rugged mountains, deep valleys<\/strong> and grasslands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Terrain:<\/strong> Northern areas have <strong>cold deserts;<\/strong> <strong>the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is one of the deepest canyons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rivers:<\/strong> It is the <strong>source of the Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Yellow River and Mekong.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"314\">Lakes:<\/strong> It has both <strong data-start=\"327\" data-end=\"361\">saltwater and freshwater lakes<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"130\" data-end=\"176\"><strong data-start=\"132\" data-end=\"152\">Saltwater lakes:<\/strong> Qinghai Lake and Namtso<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"177\" data-end=\"237\"><strong data-start=\"179\" data-end=\"200\">Freshwater lakes:<\/strong> Manasarovar, Yamdrok and Pangong Tso<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glaciers:<\/strong> It has <strong>more than 46,000 glaciers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Role in Influencing Climate:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In summer, <strong>strong heating creates a low-pressure area<\/strong> that <strong>draws moist ocean winds.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This <strong>supports the southwest monsoon<\/strong> and <strong>influences rainfall in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation:<\/strong> The plateau mainly has <strong>alpine shrublands, sedge meadows and alpine steppe,<\/strong> with <strong>vegetation becoming drier from southeast to northwest.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong> Common vegetation <strong>includes Kobresia and Carex sedges, alpine forbs, juniper, dwarf rhododendron, Caragana and dwarf willow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> It supports <strong>Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan gazelle, blue sheep and white-lipped deer<\/strong>, along with <strong>predators such as the snow leopard, gray wolf and brown bear.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">Gangdise Mountains<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> The <strong>Gangdise Mountains<\/strong> are located in the southwestern part of <strong>Tibet, parallel to the Himalayas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Extensions:<\/strong> The range <strong>runs in a northwest-southeast direction<\/strong> and <strong>extends eastward into the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Name:<\/strong> The mountains are also <strong>known as Gangdise Shan<\/strong> and the <strong>Kailas Range.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also called \u201c<strong>Transhimalaya<\/strong>\u201d because it <strong>lies behind the Himalayas, separated by the Tsangpo valley.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Peaks:<\/strong> Its <strong>highest peak is Mt.
