This virus is a part of the <strong>poxviridae family<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Smallpox and monkeypox viruses<\/strong> are also a part of the <strong>same family<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>LSDV<\/strong> shares <strong>antigenic similarities<\/strong> with the <strong>sheep pox virus (SPPV) and the goat pox virus (GTPV)<\/strong> and it is <strong>similar in the immune response<\/strong> to those viruses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The outbreak of the disease is associated with <strong>high temperature and high humidity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Origin:\u00a0<\/strong>Lumpy skin disease was <strong>first<\/strong> seen as an <strong>epidemic in Zambia in 1929<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>India<\/strong>, the case was <strong>first reported<\/strong> from <strong>Odisha in August 2019<\/strong> and currently, it has spread to <strong>15 states<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:\u00a0<\/strong>The disease is characterized by <strong>fever, enlarged superficial lymph nodes<\/strong> and <strong>multiple nodules<\/strong> on the <strong>skin and mucous membranes<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Infected <strong>cattle<\/strong> also may develop <strong>edematous swelling<\/strong> in their <strong>limbs and exhibit lameness.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mortality Rate:\u00a0Morbidity<\/strong> varies between <strong>2% &#8211; 45%<\/strong> and the <strong>mortality rate<\/strong> is usually <strong>less than 10%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>: There is <strong>no treatment for the virus<\/strong>, so <strong>prevention by vaccination<\/strong> is the most effective means of control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implications:\u00a0<\/strong>The virus has important <strong>economic implications<\/strong> since affected animals tend to have <strong>permanent damage to their skin<\/strong>, <strong>lowering the commercial value<\/strong> of their <strong>hide<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), which caused a major outbreak among cattle in India in 2022, is spreading again in several parts of the country.
