BBC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Przewalski\u2019s horse is subspecies of wild horse.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>only living wild relative of the domestic horse.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Its scientific name is<strong>\u00a0E. ferus przewalskii.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is locally known as <strong>kertagy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Distribution:\u00a0 <\/strong>It once lived across the grasslands of <strong data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1086\">Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and northern China<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li data-section-id=\"dp94q\" data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1193\">It was once considered <strong data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1145\">extinct in the wild<\/strong> but <strong>survived<\/strong> through <strong>captive-breeding<\/strong> programs.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"dp94q\" data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1193\">It was <strong>reintroduced<\/strong> into <strong>Kazakhstan in 2024<\/strong> after a 200-year absence through the <strong>\u201cReturn of the Wild Horses\u201d programme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> They have<strong> tan to reddish brown fur with white on the belly<\/strong>,<strong> dark brown on the lower legs<\/strong> and a\u00a0<strong>white muzzle.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are markings in <strong>its body which are of yellowish-white belly, dark lower legs,<\/strong> and zebra-like stripes behind the knees.\n<ul>\n<li>It has a <strong>stiff, dark brown mane<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>stocky build with short legs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>large eyes are on the sides of their head,<\/strong> giving them a wide view to spot predators while grazing or drinking.<\/li>\n<li>They grow a <strong>thick coat in winter to stay warm and shed it in summer to keep cool.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It can <strong>withstand harsh winters with temperatures<\/strong> dropping<strong> below minus 30 degrees Celsius.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Their<strong> tan color helps them blend into the grasslands a<\/strong>nd<strong> deserts where they live.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Weight:<\/strong> They weigh <strong>247-383 kg.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Height:<\/strong> It stand<strong> 48-58 inches (120-146 cm) tall<\/strong> at the shoulder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> In the wild, it feed mainly on<strong> grass and leaves from shrubs and trees.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> It is a<strong> very social animal forming herds<\/strong> consisting of <strong>one stallion and four to 10 mares with their offspring.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The stallion is<strong> responsible for the herd\u2019s protection and coordinates daily movements of the group<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Herds don\u2019t mix<strong> but share territory.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>digest food through hindgut fermentation,<\/strong> allowing them to survive on large amounts of low-quality vegetation and water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ecological Importance:<\/strong> They <strong>graze on dry vegetation<\/strong> to<strong> reduce wildfire risk,<\/strong> their<strong> hooves disturb the soil letting<\/strong> new plants take root, and <strong>they disperse seeds across the landscape as they roam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong> It was\u00a0listed\u00a0as<strong> extinct-in-the-wild<\/strong> until one adult was found in<strong> 1996,<\/strong> after which it was<strong> re-listed as critically endangered.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2011, it has been <strong>classified as endangered by the IUCN.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Two Przewalski\u2019s horse foals were born in central Kazakhstan, the first in the country in over 200 years.
