Context: <\/strong>Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative technology with applications across the economy and society. However, its rapid development also raises concerns regarding human control, employment, inequality, sovereignty, democracy and resource consumption<\/strong>. India therefore needs a policy framework that promotes innovation while preventing excessive dependence on others.<\/p>\n

Four priorities for India\u2019s AI policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. Ensuring human control over AI development<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. India should support a global consensus<\/strong> to ensure that the development and orientation of AI systems remain subject to meaningful human control.<\/li>\n

                  4. AI-generated information can potentially influence public discourse and democratic communication<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                  5. India faces a gap between its large volume of data generation and its domestic data-centre capacity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n

                    Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                    6. Data-centre expansion should follow energy-efficient and water-efficient standards<\/strong>, while encouraging renewable energy.<\/li>\n
                    7. India should balance innovation, economic benefits, technological sovereignty, democratic values and environmental sustainability<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
