important corals <\/strong>in the<strong> Caribbean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Their scientific name is<strong> Acropora cervicornis.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They, <strong>along with elkhorn coral and star corals<\/strong> (boulder, lobed, and mountainous) <strong>built Caribbean coral reefs over the last 5,000 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> They lives in<strong> many coral reef habitats including spur and groove, bank reef, patch reef, and transitional reef habitats<\/strong>, as well as<strong> on limestone ridges, terraces, and hardbottom habitats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are found typically in <strong>clear, shallow water (15\u201360 feet) on coral reefs <\/strong>throughout the <strong>Bahamas, Florida, and the Caribbean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The northern extent of the range in the<strong> Atlantic Ocean is Palm Beach County, Florida,<\/strong> where they are relatively rare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Their colonies are <strong>golden tan or pale brown with white tips<\/strong> and they get their <strong>color from the algae that live within their tissue.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have<strong> antler-like branches<\/strong> and <strong>typically stem out from a central trunk and angle upward. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Branches are <strong>typically 1\u20133 inches thick.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Individual colonies can<strong> grow to at least 4 feet in height and 6 feet in diameter. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Their colonies<strong> can grow in dense stands<\/strong> and<strong> form an interlocking framework known as thickets.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These provide<strong> important habitat for other reef animals, especially fish.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Each<strong> staghorn coral colony is made up of many individual polyps<\/strong> that grow together.\n<ul>\n<li>Each polyp is an<strong> exact copy of all the polyps<\/strong> in the same colony.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> They<strong> get food from photosynthetic algae<\/strong> that live inside the coral&#8217;s cells.\n<ul>\n<li>They als<strong>o feed by capturing plankton<\/strong> with their polyps\u2019 tentacles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Behavior:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are<strong> simultaneous hermaphrodite.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It means <strong>each colony produces both eggs and sperm<\/strong>, but usually does not self-fertilize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>They can also <strong>form new colonies <\/strong>when broken pieces, called fragments, re-attach to hard surfaces.\n<ul>\n<li>They are <strong>one of the fastest growing corals,<\/strong> when healthy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Due to their <strong>bush-like growth form,<\/strong> they provide<strong> complex habitat for fish and other coral reef organisms. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>When <strong>staghorn corals are abundant<\/strong>, they <strong>provide shoreline protections from large waves and storms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> The greatest threa<strong>t to staghorn coral is ocean warming &amp; climate change, which causes the corals<\/strong> to release the algae that live in their tissue and provide them food, usually causing death.\n<ul>\n<li>Other threats include<strong> diseases <\/strong>such as<strong> white band <\/strong>and<strong> white plague diseases, ocean acidification,<\/strong> unsustainable fishing practices, and land-based sources of pollution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>White Band Disease<\/strong> (WBD) is a <strong>common tissue loss disease<\/strong> that affects the two Caribbean acroporid species <strong><em>Acropora cervicornis<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><em>Acropora palmata<\/em><\/strong> throughout their geographic range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\" trunk.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"owhanr\" data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"1956\">Individual colonies can grow to at least <strong data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1955\">6 feet in height and 12 feet in diameter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"11wktzz\" data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2051\">They are usually lives in <strong data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2035\">clear, shallow water about 1\u201315 feet deep<\/strong> on coral reefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"19thq9t\" data-start=\"2121\" data-end=\"2223\"><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They also form<strong> dense groups<\/strong> called <strong data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"291\">\u201cthickets\u201d<\/strong> in very shallow water which provides important habitat for other reef animals, especially <strong data-start=\"393\" data-end=\"401\">fish<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"b9bx3l\" data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2340\">Their broken branches<strong> can reattach to hard surfaces<\/strong> and form <strong data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2297\">new colonies<\/strong>, providing a form of asexual reproduction.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"2gxkja\" data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2469\">They also reproduces sexually once a year through <strong data-start=\"2402\" data-end=\"2424\">broadcast spawning<\/strong>, usually after the full moon in late summer.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"jnsqsz\" data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2561\"><strong data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2510\">They are simultaneous hermaphrodite<\/strong>, meaning each colony produces both eggs and sperm.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"17paxc1\" data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2691\">When healthy, they are one of the <strong data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2632\">fastest-growing corals<\/strong> and can grow up to <strong data-start=\"2652\" data-end=\"2690\">5 inches in branch length per year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"638\">Threats: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"1txs3zx\" data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"703\"><strong data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"638\">White band disease<\/strong> was a <strong>major cause of this decline<\/strong> and kills the coral\u2019s tissues.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"1e9fjk2\" data-start=\"926\" data-end=\"1032\">Other threats include <strong data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1031\">ocean warming and acidification,
