He worked in Pegu and later joined the <\/span><b>Burma Public Works Accounts Office in Rangoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he worked for nearly ten years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His personal life was marked by tragedy. His first wife, <\/span><b>Shanti Chakravarty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and their infant son died of plague in <\/span><b>1908<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1910<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he married <\/span><b>Mokshada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a young widow, whom he later renamed <\/span><b>Hiranmoyee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and taught to read and write.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He returned to <\/span><b>Howrah near Calcutta in 1916<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and began writing and publishing extensively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Literary journey:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He was strongly influenced by <\/span><b>Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wrote his first story, <\/span><b>\u201cKashinath,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while still at school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1903<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he wrote <\/span><b>\u201cMandir\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which won the <\/span><b>Kuntalin Puraskar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> literary prize in 1904. He submitted it under his uncle\u2019s name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His novel <\/span><b>Barodidi (1907)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> was published without his knowledge or authorship credit.<\/strong> Its portrayal of a<strong> widow\u2019s forbidden love<\/strong> attracted considerable attention in Bengali literary circles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was<strong> associated with the literary magazine<\/strong> <\/span><b>Jamuna which<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped him gain wider recognition. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He contributed works such as <\/span><b>Ramer Sumati<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>\u201cNarir Lekha\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the magazine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He sometimes wrote under pseudonyms, including <\/span><b>St. C.
