year on <strong>September 11.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also observed as <strong>National Forest Martyrs Day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It commemorates <strong>the historic event that took place in 1730 in Rajasthan where 363 members of the Bishnoi community,<\/strong> led by<strong> Amrita Devi<\/strong>, <strong>sacrificed their lives<\/strong> to <strong>protect sacred Khejri trees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>About the event:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maharaja Abhai Singh of the Marwar Kingdom<\/strong> gave the <strong>order to cut down Khejri trees<\/strong>, which are <strong>revered by the Bishnoi community<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amrita Devi Bishnoi and her three daughters sacrificed their lives <\/strong>while protecting the sacred Khejri trees.<\/li>\n<li>Inspired by their courage, <strong>363 Bishnois gave their lives<\/strong> by embracing the trees to prevent them from being felled.<\/li>\n<li>Their sacrifice later inspired the <strong>Chipko Movement of the 1970s<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>Khejri tree (Prosopis cineraria)<\/strong> holds great importance in <strong>Rajasthan, especially among the Bishnoi community.<\/strong> It is considered <strong>as sacred as Tulsi and has strong religious significance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Bishnoi<\/strong>\u00a0was a <strong>legendary environmental protector<\/strong> and a<strong>n early symbol of ecological conservation in India.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>She is popularly known as <strong>Mata Amrita Devi Bishnoi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birth:<\/strong> She was <strong>born in the 17th century in Rajasthan<\/strong> and belonged to the <strong>Bishnoi community<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activities undertaken:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>She is <strong>remembered for her supreme sacrifice<\/strong> during the historic <strong>Khejarli incident of 1730<\/strong> in present-day Jodhpur district, Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<li>When th<strong>e ruler of Jodhpur ordered the cutting of Khejri trees<\/strong>, she strongly opposed this act, as the<strong> Bishnoi faith considers the protection of trees and nature as sacred.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>She was killed by the soldiers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Following her sacrifice, <strong>363 Bishnois men, women and children also gave their lives while protecting the trees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Shocked by this mass sacrifice,<strong> the ruler ordered an immediate halt to tree-felling and issued a royal decree<\/strong> protecting trees and wildlife in Bishnoi areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy:<\/strong> Her sacrifice later inspired environmental movements such as the <strong>Chipko Movement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Awards: <\/strong>Today, the <strong>Amrita Devi Bishnoi Wildlife Protection Award<\/strong> is given by the Government of India in her
