{"id":372274,"date":"2026-09-21T15:45:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T10:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=372274"},"modified":"2026-09-21T15:45:04","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T10:15:04","slug":"national-green-tribunal-ngt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-green-tribunal-ngt\/","title":{"rendered":"National Green Tribunal (NGT)\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The National Green Tribunal (NGT) did not rule in favour of environmental groups or public-interest parties in any of the 16 merit appeals it heard in the first six months of 2026, according to a report by the South Asian Reporter for Environment Laws (SAREL).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\"><strong>About National Green Tribunal (NGT)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>National Green Tribunal (NGT)<\/strong> is a <strong>statutory body<\/strong> that came into <strong>existence in 2010<\/strong> under the <strong>National Green Tribunal act 2010.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>act provides<\/strong> for <strong>effective and expeditious disposal<\/strong> of cases <strong>relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests<\/strong> and <strong>other natural resources.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The tribunal is <strong>guided by principles of natural justice<\/strong> and is <strong>not bound by the mainstream code of civil procedure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate:<\/strong> The Tribunal is mandated <strong>to make and endeavour for disposal<\/strong> of applications or appeals finally <strong>within 6 months of filing of the same<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sitting places:<\/strong> The tribunal has <strong>five places of sittings<\/strong> with <strong>New Delhi as the Principal place<\/strong> of sitting and <strong>Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai<\/strong> are the other four.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Tribunal comprises of the <strong>Chairperson<\/strong>, the <strong>Judicial Members and Expert Members<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They shall <strong>hold office for a term of five years<\/strong> and are <strong>not eligible for reappointment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>chairperson<\/strong> is <strong>appointed by the Central Government<\/strong> in <strong>consultation<\/strong> with the <strong>Chief Justice of India (CJI)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Judicial and expert members<\/strong> are <strong>appointed on recommendations<\/strong> by the <strong>Selection Committee<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member Qualifications:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chairperson<\/strong>: A person who <strong>is or has been a Judge of the Supreme Court or Chief Justice of the High Court.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Judicial Member<\/strong>: A person who <strong>is or has been a Judge of a High Court.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Expert Member:<\/strong> Qualification and experience in <strong>relevant scientific and technological field or practical experience<\/strong> in dealing with environmental matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jurisdiction: <\/strong>The NGT deals with civil cases under the <strong>seven laws related to the environment,<\/strong> these include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act,1974,<\/li>\n<li>The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act,1977,<\/li>\n<li>The Forest (Conservation) Act,1980,<\/li>\n<li>The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act,1981,<\/li>\n<li>The Environment (Protection) Act,1986<\/li>\n<li>The Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991 and<\/li>\n<li>The Biological Diversity Act, 2002.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The\u00a0<strong>Wildlife (Protection) Act,1972<\/strong> and <strong>Scheduled Tribes and Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006<\/strong> have been <strong>kept out of NGT\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) did not rule in favour of environmental groups or public-interest parties in any of the 16 merit appeals it heard in the first six months of 2026, according to a report by the South Asian Reporter for Environment Laws (SAREL).
