{"id":372406,"date":"2026-09-23T14:42:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T09:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=372406"},"modified":"2026-09-23T14:42:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T09:12:14","slug":"damodar-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/damodar-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Damodar River"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Historically rare hilsa fish have been spotted recently swimming upstream in the Damodar River.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Damodar River<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_372415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-372415\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-372415\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-23-112916.png?resize=300%2C268&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Damodar River\" width=\"300\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-23-112916.png?resize=300%2C268&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-23-112916.png?w=679&amp;ssl=1 679w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-372415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Research Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-start=\"38\" data-end=\"110\"><strong>Origin:<\/strong> <strong>Damodar River<\/strong>\u00a0rises<\/span>\u00a0in the<strong data-start=\"38\" data-end=\"110\"> Palamu Hills of Chhotanagpur in Jharkhand.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a river flowing across the<strong> Indian states of West Bengal and Jharkhand.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is known as the <strong>Sorrow of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has varying landforms such as<strong> plateaus, hills, uplands, and flat plains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Course of the river:<\/strong> It flows generally in a <strong data-start=\"210\" data-end=\"238\">south-easterly direction<\/strong> for about <strong data-start=\"249\" data-end=\"259\">540 km<\/strong>, of which <strong data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"298\">240 km lies in Jharkhand<\/strong> and the remaining part flows through <strong data-start=\"336\" data-end=\"351\">West Bengal<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Below <strong data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"603\">Durgapur in West Bengal<\/strong>, the Damodar River <strong data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"684\">suddenly changes its course and divides into two channels<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>These two channels are the <strong data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"801\">Damodar Channel, also known as the Amta Channel, and the Kanka\u2013Mundeshwari Channel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> The major tributaries are the <strong>Barakar, Konar, Jamunia, Bokaro, Sali, Ghari, Guaia, Khadia and Bhera Rivers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributary of:<\/strong> The <strong>main channel<\/strong> of the Damodar eventually joins the<strong data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"875\"> Hooghly River<\/strong>, which ultimately flows into the <strong data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"926\">Bay of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Total length:<\/strong> It<strong data-start=\"4\" data-end=\"56\">\u00a0has a total length of about 592 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Catchment area:<\/strong> The catchment area of the river is about <strong>22,000 sq. km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Damodar basin is known for<strong> its coal deposits.<\/strong> It accounts for<strong> 46% of the country\u2019s coal reserves<\/strong> and commonly referred as the<strong> \u2018store house of <\/strong><strong>Indian coal.\u2019 <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is considered as the <strong>centre of coking coal in the country.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is an important<strong> industrial and mineral-rich region of India.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It passes through the Gondwana coalfields, including <strong>Jharia, Raniganj, Bokaro, Karanpura and Giridih.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dam situated on river:<\/strong> <strong>Damodar Valley Project<\/strong> is a <strong>multipurpose river valley project <\/strong>developed on the <strong>Damodar River and its tributaries.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Panchet Dam and the Tenughat Dam <\/strong>has been constructed on the Damodar River.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Historically rare hilsa fish have been spotted recently swimming upstream in the Damodar River.
