Context:<\/b> Make in India was launched in <\/span>2014<\/b> with the objective of making India a major manufacturing hub by promoting production <\/span>for India and for the world<\/b>. Over the last twelve years, it has evolved from an initiative into a broader manufacturing ecosystem supported by <\/span>ease of doing business, infrastructure development, digital and tax reforms, investment, PLI schemes and innovation<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Achievements of Make in India<\/b><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Improved Ease of Doing Business<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. India has reduced more than <\/span>47,000 compliances<\/b> as of November 2025 through simplification, digitisation, decriminalisation and removal of redundant compliances.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. The <\/span>National Single Window System<\/b> has integrated approvals across <\/span>32 Central Ministries and 34 States\/UTs<\/b>, covering more than <\/span>686 Central and 7,498 State approvals<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. The <\/span>Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026<\/b> has further strengthened trust-based governance by decriminalising <\/span>717 provisions<\/b> and amending <\/span>784 provisions across 79 Central Acts<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Expansion of Infrastructure<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. The development of <\/span>Dedicated Freight Corridors, Industrial Corridors, Sagarmala and Bharatmala<\/b> has improved connectivity between production centres and markets.<\/span><\/li>\n
        2. The expansion of <\/span>ports and airports<\/b>, along with <\/span>PM Gati Shakti<\/b>, has <\/span>strengthened integrated logistics planning and helped reduce logistics costs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            \n
          1. Digital and Tax Reforms<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
              \n
            1. The introduction of <\/span>GST<\/b> has created a more integrated national market and facilitated the movement of goods across states.<\/span><\/li>\n
            2. Platforms such as <\/span>ONDC and the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP)<\/b> have strengthened India’s digital commerce and logistics infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\n
            3. Thus, India’s digital public infrastructure is increasingly supporting its physical manufacturing ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                \n
              1. Increase in Foreign Investment<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                  \n
                1. India has liberalised FDI norms in sectors such as <\/span>defence, railways, insurance, construction and space<\/b>, thereby improving access to global capital, technology and expertise.<\/span><\/li>\n
                2. FDI inflows increased to <\/span>\u20b949.46 lakh crore during 2014\u201324<\/b>, compared with <\/span>\u20b925.40 lakh crore during the previous decade<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                    \n
                  1. Success of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                      \n
                    1. As of June 2026, the <\/span>PLI schemes<\/b> have attracted <\/span>\u20b92.58 lakh crore in investment<\/b>, generated <\/span>\u20b923.79 lakh crore in production and sales<\/b>, and contributed to <\/span>\u20b915.53 lakh crore in exports<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    2. The PLI schemes have also supported more than <\/span>14.57 lakh direct and indirect jobs<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    3. In the electronics sector, production reached <\/span>\u20b913.11 lakh crore in FY 2025\u201326<\/b>, while electronics exports reached <\/span>\u20b94.24 lakh crore<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    4. In the automobile sector, the Auto PLI scheme has attracted <\/span>\u20b945,477 crore in investment<\/b> and generated more than <\/span>67,000 jobs<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                        \n
                      1. Development of Semiconductor and Industrial Ecosystem<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                          \n
                        1. The <\/span>India Semiconductor Mission<\/b>, with a recently announced outlay of <\/span>\u20b91.27 lakh crore<\/b>, aims to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and deepen the value chain.<\/span><\/li>\n
                        2. The <\/span>BHAVYA Scheme<\/b>, with an outlay of <\/span>\u20b933,660 crore<\/b>, aims to establish <\/span>100 world-class industrial parks<\/b> during FY 2026\u201327 to FY 2030\u201331.<\/span><\/li>\n
                        3. These industrial parks can provide common infrastructure and help MSMEs achieve greater scale and competitiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                            \n
                          1. Support to MSMEs and Startups<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                              \n
                            1. ECLGS 5.0<\/b> aims to facilitate an additional credit flow of <\/span>\u20b92.55 lakh crore<\/b>, thereby supporting businesses facing financial pressures.<\/span><\/li>\n
                            2. The <\/span>Government e-Marketplace (GeM)<\/b> has facilitated procurement of more than <\/span>\u20b920 lakh crore<\/b> through over <\/span>three crore orders<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                            3. Startup India<\/b> has enabled more than <\/span>2.5 lakh recognised startups<\/b>, which have generated over <\/span>25 lakh jobs<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                            4. Nearly half of these recognised startups have emerged from <\/span>Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities<\/b>, thereby promoting entrepreneurship beyond major urban centres.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                \n
                              1. Promotion of R&D and Innovation<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                  \n
                                1. The \u20b91 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund<\/b> aims to promote private-sector research, deep-tech development and high-impact innovation.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                2. This initiative can help India move beyond <\/span>scale and assembly towards technology-led manufacturing, stronger intellectual property creation and greater domestic value addition<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                    \n
                                  1. Greater Global Market Access<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                      \n
                                    1. India has signed <\/span>nine FTAs covering 38 countries in six years<\/b>, thereby expanding preferential market access for Indian manufacturers.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                    2. These agreements can help Indian companies diversify export destinations, integrate more deeply into <\/span>global value chains<\/b> and increase production for international markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                      Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n
                                        \n
                                      1. Limited Domestic Manufacturing Depth<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                          \n
                                        1. Although India has expanded its final assembly capabilities, it still needs to deepen domestic manufacturing of <\/span>components, raw materials, precision parts and capital goods<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                        2. Greater domestic value addition is necessary to make manufacturing more resilient and competitive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                            \n
                                          1. Weak Linkages between Large Industries and MSMEs<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                              \n
                                            1. Stronger linkages between large <\/span>Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)<\/b> and MSME suppliers are required to develop efficient domestic supply chains.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                            2. This can help MSMEs become an integral part of large manufacturing ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                \n
                                              1. Need for Export-Oriented Manufacturing Clusters<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                  \n
                                                1. India needs specialised manufacturing clusters equipped with <\/span>plug-and-play infrastructure, testing laboratories, logistics facilities and worker housing<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                2. Such clusters can reduce logistics costs and help Indian manufacturers achieve economies of scale.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                    \n
                                                  1. Technology Gap<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                      \n
                                                    1. Indian manufacturing needs to move beyond <\/span>cost competitiveness towards technology competitiveness<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                    2. Greater adoption of <\/span>AI, automation and Industry 4.0<\/b> is required to improve productivity, quality and efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                        \n
                                                      1. Limited R&D and Intellectual Property Creation<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                          \n
                                                        1. India needs greater private-sector investment in <\/span>research and development, deep technology and innovation<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                        2. Stronger R&D capabilities are essential for developing high-value products and increasing domestic technological capabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                            \n
                                                          1. Under-utilisation of FTAs<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                              \n
                                                            1. Signing FTAs alone cannot ensure higher exports because Indian industries also need to effectively utilise the preferential market access provided by these agreements.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                            2. Greater awareness, better standards, quality improvement and stronger export capabilities are therefore required.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                \n
                                                              1. Difficulty in Technology Adoption by MSMEs<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                  \n
                                                                1. Many MSMEs require greater support to adopt <\/span>AI, automation, predictive maintenance, digital twins and AI-based quality control<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                2. Without wider technology adoption, MSMEs may find it difficult to remain competitive in increasingly technology-driven global markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                                                  Way Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n
                                                                    \n
                                                                  1. Deepen Domestic Value Addition<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                      \n
                                                                    1. India should promote domestic production of <\/span>components, raw materials, precision parts and capital goods<\/b> to reduce dependence on external sources.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                    2. Stronger supply-chain linkages should be developed between large industries and MSMEs to increase domestic value addition.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                        \n
                                                                      1. Develop Export-Oriented Manufacturing Clusters<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                          \n
                                                                        1. India should develop world-class manufacturing clusters with <\/span>plug-and-play infrastructure, testing laboratories, logistics facilities and worker housing<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                        2. These clusters should focus on sectors such as <\/span>electronics, textiles, auto components, chemicals and engineering<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                            \n
                                                                          1. Continue Trust-Based Governance<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                              \n
                                                                            1. India should continue <\/span>Non-Financial Regulatory Reforms (NFRR)<\/b> and legislative decriminalisation under the <\/span>Jan Vishwas framework<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                            2. Regulatory simplification should be accompanied by greater transparency and accountability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                \n
                                                                              1. Promote Smart Manufacturing<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                  \n
                                                                                1. The government should support MSMEs in adopting <\/span>AI, automation and Industry 4.0 technologies<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                2. Shared Industry 4.0 facilities can be developed within manufacturing clusters to make advanced technologies accessible to smaller firms.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                3. Technologies such as <\/span>predictive maintenance, digital twins and AI-based quality control<\/b> should be encouraged to improve manufacturing efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                    \n
                                                                                  1. Build Human Capital for Industry 4.0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                      \n
                                                                                    1. Workers should be reskilled and upskilled for <\/span>human-machine collaboration<\/b>.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                    2. Skill-development programmes should be aligned with emerging technologies and the changing requirements of modern manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                        \n
                                                                                      1. Strengthen R&D and Innovation<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                          \n
                                                                                        1. The <\/span>RDI Fund<\/b> should be effectively utilised to promote private-sector R&D, deep-tech innovation and intellectual property creation.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                        2. The <\/span>AI Mission should be linked with manufacturing<\/b> to encourage the development of technology-driven production capabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                            \n
                                                                                          1. Maximise the Benefits of FTAs<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
                                                                                              \n
                                                                                            1. Indian industries should be supported in effectively utilising existing FTAs and accessing international markets.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                                                                            2. Improvements in <\/span>product standards, quality, logistics and export capabilities<\/b> can help Indian firms integrate more deeply into global value chains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                                                                              Conclusion: <\/b>Make in India has evolved from a policy initiative into a broader manufacturing ecosystem supported by infrastructure, PLI schemes, digital reforms, investment, startups and innovation. The next phase should focus on deeper domestic value addition, export-oriented clusters, stronger R&D and smarter manufacturing through AI and Industry 4.0. This approach can help India move from being primarily a large-scale assembly and manufacturing destination towards a technology-driven global manufacturing hub.<\/span><\/p>\n
