the<strong> southern slope of the Vindhyan range <\/strong>in <strong>western Madhya Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are situated on the banks of the <strong>Baghani River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"17h8s5\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\">These are <strong>not natural<\/strong> but were carved over a period of time during the<strong> Satavahana period.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"17h8s5\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\"><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"17h8s5\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\">They consist of <strong data-start=\"18\" data-end=\"50\">nine rock-cut Buddhist caves<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"17h8s5\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\">The were<strong> excavated on a perpendicular sandstone rock face of a hill<\/strong> across the seasonal stream of Baghani.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">These rock-cut Buddhist monasteries are<strong> renowned for their stunning mural paintings,<\/strong> which illustrate the Jataka tales.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>earthy reds, yellows, and greens of the murals<\/strong> offer a rare glimpse into the <strong>spiritual and artistic traditions of ancient Buddhism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-section-id=\"17h8s5\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"51\">Out of the original <strong>nine<\/strong> caves,<strong> only five <\/strong>have<strong> survived, <\/strong>all of which are<strong> viharas or resting places for monks,<\/strong> having a <strong>quadrangular plan<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cave 4<\/b>, also known as the<b>\u00a0Rang Mahal,<\/b> is the most important of the five caves that still exist (Palace of Colors).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tempera<\/b>\u00a0was used to paint the\u00a0<b>Viharas of Bagh\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0walls and ceilings<strong>, with shards still evident in Caves 3 and 4 (remnants also observed in Caves 2, 5, and 7).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Cave 2 is <\/b>popularly known as\u00a0<b>\u201cPandava Cave&#8221;<\/b><span class=\"iNqyIf\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" data-sfc-root=\"ep\" data-copy-service-computed-style=\"font-family: &quot;Google Sans&quot;, Valley<\/strong>\u00a0are located in the<strong> Chambal valley region of present-day Morena district in Madhya Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They includes <strong>Bateshwar, Padavali and Kakarmath.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">These were <strong data-start=\"21\" data-end=\"68\">built between the 8th and 11th centuries CE<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They show the <strong data-start=\"84\" data-end=\"151\">development of the regional Nagara style of temple architecture<\/strong> under the <strong data-start=\"162\" data-end=\"213\">Gurjara-Pratihara and Kachchhapaghata dynasties<\/strong>, which ruled the region during this period.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They share similar features, including the use of <strong data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"344\">sandstone in dry masonry, planned temple layouts, and detailed sculptures<\/strong> incorporated into the temple structures.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About Bateshwar temple:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was built mostly during the<strong> Gurjara-Pratihara period between the 8th and 10th centuries CE.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>comprised of more than 200 small shrines<\/strong> arranged <strong>across a terraced hillside landscape.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>constructed entirely of finely dressed sandstone blocks without mortar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The shrines<strong> illustrate advanced structural knowledge and modular temple construction<\/strong> techniques.<\/li>\n<li>It demonstrates <strong>a wide typological range of Nagara-style shrines,<\/strong> from the temple <strong>with simple flat-roof to developed shikhara atop sanctum.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About <\/strong><strong data-start=\"41\" data-end=\"68\">Padavali Temple Complex:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is associated with the <strong data-start=\"92\" data-end=\"118\">Kachchhapaghata rulers<\/strong> and dates back to the <strong data-start=\"141\" data-end=\"160\">10th century CE<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The original <strong data-start=\"177\" data-end=\"209\">sanctum is no longer present<\/strong>, but the remaining <strong data-start=\"229\" data-end=\"259\">mandapa and entrance porch<\/strong> have<strong> beautifully carved pillars, beams and ceilings.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The carvings show <strong data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"362\">detailed religious themes<\/strong> and reflect the close connection between <strong data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"434\">architecture and sculpture<\/strong> in the<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nagara-style-of-temple-architecture\/\"> Nagara style<\/a> of Central India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About Kakarmath temple<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It was constructed in the <strong>early 11th century CE under the Kachchhapaghata ruler Kirtiraj<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was<strong> built on a high platform and constructed in dry masonry<\/strong> using precisely interlocked sandstone blocks.<\/li>\n<li>It features<strong> a long shikhara and axial plan<\/strong> comprising a sanctum, vestibule and pillared hall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chausath Yogini Temple:<\/strong> Another temple in the region is<strong> Chausath Yogini Temple at Mitaoli<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is <strong>geographically related to this group, but represents a distinct architectural and ritual tradition.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is associated with <strong>Yogini cult worship and circular temple design.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It has a <strong>distinct universal value within the broader context of Yogini temple
