<strong>River Pregolya, <\/strong>which drains its waters into the<strong> Vistula Lagoon.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Administered by:<\/strong> It <span class=\"iNqyIf\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" data-sfc-root=\"ep\" data-complete=\"true\">is <\/span><span class=\"iNqyIf\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" data-sfc-root=\"ep\" data-complete=\"true\">under the administrative control of <\/span><strong><span as K\u00f6nigsberg<\/strong> and was the <strong>capital of East Prussia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It became<strong> part of the Soviet Union after the Red Army captured it<\/strong> in1945, towards the end of World War II.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>victorious Allied powers subsequently divided East Prussia<\/strong>,<strong> and the northern part, including K\u00f6nigsberg,<\/strong> came under Soviet control.<\/li>\n<li>It was later renamed<strong> Kaliningrad.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Population:<\/strong> The region has a population of about <strong>one million.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic importance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Its <strong>location gives Moscow a military foothold on the Baltic Sea,<\/strong> far from the Russian mainland but <strong>close to several NATO countries. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It provides a<strong> base for Russian air defence, missile and naval forces<\/strong>, allowing Moscow to project military power into members<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Such a situation could <strong>isolate Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania<\/strong> during a conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The corridor is also important because <strong>NATO forces use the connection through Poland and Lithuania to move personnel, equipment and supplies<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The Suwa\u0142ki Gap is therefore considered a <strong>vulnerable point in NATO\u2019s eastern defences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Any Russian attempt to seize the corridor would result in a <strong>direct military confrontation with Poland, Lithuania and
