for<strong> her efforts to promote peace and international law.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She has been honoured for her lifelong<strong> commitment to upholding international law, protecting human rights, and promoting justice against apartheid.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>She became the<strong> first woman to practise law in Natal Province<\/strong> and the <strong>first Black woman to serve on South Africa&#8217;s High Court.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birth:<\/strong> She was <strong>born in 1941 into a family of Indian Tamil origin<\/strong> in Durban, South Africa.\n<ul>\n<li>Her parents are <strong>Narrainsamy Naidoo and Santhama Naidoo.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education:<\/strong> She studied<strong> law at the University of Natal<\/strong> and later attained a <strong>Master&#8217;s and Doctorate from Harvard.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Contributions:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>She started her<strong> human rights work during the apartheid era and became the first non-white woman to build her own law practice.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She<strong> was then appointed as a High Court Judge in South Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1967, she set up a practice in South Africa&#8217;s Natal Province, <\/strong>becoming the first woman to do so.<\/li>\n<li>UN General Assembly appointed<strong> her as judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda<\/strong> after she defended several opponents of apartheid.<\/li>\n<li>She also <strong>serve as a judge on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-criminal-court-icc\/\">International Criminal Court (ICC)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>From<strong> 2008 to 2014, <\/strong>she held the position of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-discuss-the-structure-functioning-and-objective-of-the-office-of-the-high-commissioner-for-human-rights-ohchr\/\">United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She also chaired the <strong>UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory<\/strong> from <strong>2021 to 2025, and in 2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Currently, she is a <strong>judge on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-court-of-justice-significance-and-challenges-explained-pointwise\/\">International Court of Justice<\/a><\/strong> in a case where Myanmar stands
