DTE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Sarus Crane (Antigone antigone)<\/strong> is the <strong>world\u2019s tallest flying bird<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>India\u2019s only resident breeding crane species.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> It inhabits <strong>wetlands, marshes, shallow water bodies, grasslands and agricultural landscapes<\/strong>, including flooded paddy fields.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> It is found across parts of <strong>Southeast Asia, northern India and northern Australia.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, it is largely restricted to <strong>Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana<\/strong>, with isolated populations in <strong>Maharashtra<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteritics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> It has <strong>grey plumage, a bare red head and upper neck<\/strong>, and <strong>reddish legs.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It stands about<strong> 1.5 m tall.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social Behaviour:<\/strong> It is usually <strong>found in pairs or small groups of three or four birds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Breeding:<\/strong> It is <strong>monogamous<\/strong> and is <strong>known to mate for life<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It builds <strong>nests in natural wetlands and flooded paddy fields.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecological Importance:<\/strong> Its presence <strong>indicates the health of wetland and agricultural ecosystems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Wetland degradation<\/li>\n<li>Changes in agricultural land use<\/li>\n<li>Pesticides<\/li>\n<li>Power-line collisions, electrocution<\/li>\n<li>Human disturbance, poaching<\/li>\n<li>Predation by wild and free-ranging dogs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN Red List:<\/strong> <strong>Vulnerable<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CITES:<\/strong> <strong>Appendix II<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972:<\/strong> <strong>Schedule I<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About All-India Sarus Crane Survey<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_373593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-373593\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-373593\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB1.jpg?resize=245%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"All-India Sarus Crane Survey\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB1.jpg?resize=245%2C300&amp;ssl=1 245w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB1.jpg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-373593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211;
