Childhood obesity is an emerging public health concern because it increases the risk of diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases at an early age. India faces a double burden of malnutrition, where undernutrition and obesity coexist, requiring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to nutrition and healthcare.

Status of Obesity of Children in India

According to the World Obesity Atlas 2026, India ranks second globally, after China, in the number of children who are overweight or living with obesity.

In 2025, approximately 41 million Indian children had a high BMI, including 14 million living with obesity.

By 2040, the number of children living with obesity is projected to reach 20 million, highlighting the urgent need for preventive public-health measures.

Major Causes

Physical inactivity: Approximately 74% of adolescents aged 11–17 fail to meet recommended physical activity levels.

Unhealthy dietary habits: Consumption of sugary drinks and unhealthy, calorie-dense foods increases the risk of obesity.

Unhealthy food marketing: Aggressive promotion of junk food influences children’s dietary preferences and consumption patterns.

Inadequate nutritional support: Suboptimal breastfeeding and limited access to nutritious food can contribute to poor nutritional outcomes.

Socio-economic inequalities: Limited access to affordable healthy food and safe spaces for physical activity makes prevention more difficult for disadvantaged communities.

Major Challenges

Unhealthy dietary habits: Increased consumption of unhealthy foods and inadequate physical activity contribute to obesity among children and adolescents.

Aggressive junk-food marketing: Advertisements and the promotion of unhealthy food products influence children’s preferences and encourage poor dietary choices.

Unequal access to nutritious food: Children from disadvantaged households may have limited access to affordable and healthy food options, leading to poor nutrition.

Poor maternal nutrition: Inadequate maternal diets and limited nutritional awareness can adversely affect children’s nutritional outcomes, highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment.

Obesity-related health risks: Childhood obesity increases the risk of hypertension, abnormal blood lipids, type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. The Indian Academy of Paediatrics’ 2023 guidelines recommend assessing obese children above 10 for associated conditions.

Overdependence on clinical interventions: Medicines and surgery alone cannot address the wider social and environmental factors responsible for obesity. The WHO emphasises that healthier diets, physical activity and behavioural support should be the first line of defence.

Way Forward

Strengthen preventive healthcare: Healthcare professionals should identify obesity-related risks early and provide appropriate counselling and treatment.

Promote healthy schools: Schools should encourage balanced diets, sports, regular physical activity and nutritional education among students.

Regulate unhealthy food marketing: The government should strengthen regulations on junk-food advertising and its aggressive promotion, particularly to children.

Improve access to nutritious food: Policies should make healthy food more affordable and accessible, especially for economically disadvantaged households.

Empower women and families: Improving maternal nutrition, nutritional awareness and women’s access to resources can support better health outcomes for children.

Create supportive environments: Parents, schools, communities, healthcare professionals and policymakers must work together to make healthy choices easier in everyday life.

Conclusion: India needs to move beyond a treatment-oriented approach towards preventive healthcare and systemic change. Integrating nutrition education, effective regulation, women’s empowerment and affordable healthy food can help address childhood obesity while tackling the wider challenge of malnutrition.

Question: Childhood obesity is not merely a medical problem but also a socio-economic and public health challenge.
