D. Bandaranaike signed an agreement<\/strong> recognising <strong>Katchatheevu as part of Sri Lankan territory.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Access Rights:<\/strong> Indian <strong>fishermen could visit the island to rest, dry their nets and visit St. Anthony\u2019s Church.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>However, the <strong>agreement did not settle fishing rights.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>1976 Agreement:<\/strong> A subsequent treaty <strong>restricted fishermen from both countries from fishing in each other\u2019s EEZs,<\/strong> leaving fishing rights a continuing source of uncertainty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current Position:<\/strong> Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said India had <strong>acknowledged before the Supreme Court that Katchatheevu belongs to Sri Lanka.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He also reiterated that<strong> Sri Lanka would not allow its airspace, land or sea to be used in a manner that threatens India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said India had acknowledged Katchatheevu as part of Sri Lanka before the Supreme Court.
