Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2026 Edition:<\/strong> This is the <strong>19th edition of the GII.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Coverage:<\/strong> It ranked the<strong> innovation performance of 139 economies, maps the world\u2019s top 100 innovation clusters, and tracks the main global innovation trends.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Findings of the Index:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Switzerland<\/strong> is the most innovative economy in 2026 followed by <strong>Sweden<\/strong> and the <strong>United States<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The leading economies remain <strong>largely the same as in 2025, with no new economy entering the top 15.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Europe once again has the largest share of innovation leaders,<\/strong> accounting for 14 of the 25 leading economies.<\/li>\n<li>Asia also maintains <strong>a strong presence among the top 25 innovation economies,<\/strong> with five economies, <strong>Republic of Korea, Singapore, China, Japan and Hong Kong, China in the list.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Switzerland, China, India and Rwanda<\/strong> lead their<strong> respective income groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thailand strengthens<\/strong> its position <strong>among upper-middle-income economies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kazakhstan, Bhutan and Saudi Arabia lead their respective regions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Top Innovation Clusters:<\/strong> The <strong>Shenzhen\u2013Hong Kong\u2013Guangzhou<\/strong> cluster emerged as the world\u2019s most innovative cluster overall.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tokyo\u2013Yokohama<\/strong> ranked <strong>second<\/strong>, followed by <strong>San Jose\u2013San Francisco<\/strong> at <strong>No. 3<\/strong>, which topped the index for innovation intensity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bengaluru<\/strong> and <strong>Delhi<\/strong> were ranked at <strong>No. 25<\/strong> and <strong>No. 27<\/strong> in the list, respectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s Performance in the Index<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> ranks <strong>38th<\/strong> among the 139 economies featured in the GII 2026.<\/li>\n<li>India ranks<strong> 1st among the 36 Lower middle-income group economies<\/strong> and among the<strong> 11 economies in Central and Southern Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India ranks <strong>49th in innovation inputs and 25th in innovation outputs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"yellow-h2-box\">About Global Innovation Index<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global Innovation Index\u00a0<\/strong>tracks and ranks<strong> science and technology hubs across the globe.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is considered as the w<strong>orld\u2019s leading reference for measuring innovation.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> UN and other member states<\/strong> use the index as a<strong> key reference for shaping science and technology policies<\/strong> across the globe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Released by:<\/strong> It is released by <strong>World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>First edition:<\/strong> It was published in in <strong>2007.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim<\/strong>: It aims <strong>to provide an innovation ranking and rich analysis referencing around 140 economies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has two sub-indices: <strong>the Innovation Input Sub-Index<\/strong> and the<strong> Innovation Output Sub-Index. <\/strong>It has seven pillars:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Innovation Input Sub-Index:<\/strong> It has <strong>five pillars<\/strong> which cover the economic conditions that enable innovation. They are <strong>Institutions, Human Capital and Research, Infrastructure, Market Sophistication and Business Sophistication.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation Output Sub-Index:<\/strong> It has<strong> two pillars<\/strong> capture the results of innovative activity in the economy.
