{"id":373936,"date":"2026-10-16T15:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T10:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=373936"},"modified":"2026-10-16T15:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T10:14:13","slug":"sauj-jheel-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sauj-jheel-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Sauj Jheel (UP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> India\u2019s Ramsar site tally has reached 103 with the addition of Sukhna Wetland (Chandigarh) and Sauj Jheel (UP).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Sauj Jheel (UP)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSMNvxOwi61mzPfxub4pm30OCbUX1w7gzkOIDsYy9o-gCZJMbZSIsp5FP4&amp;s=10\" alt=\"Sauj Jheel \" width=\"332\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: DD News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Sauj Jheel is located in<strong> Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>With this, <strong>Mainpuri<\/strong> got the <strong>distinction<\/strong> of the <strong>only district in the country with two Ramsar sites, <\/strong>the other being the<strong>Saman Bird Sanctuary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a<strong> shallow lake surrounded by farmland in the floodplain of the Ganga River.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>forms part of a larger network of wetlands<\/strong>, contributing to ecological connectivity in the wider landscape.<\/li>\n<li>It is close to<strong> Saman Bird Sanctuary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation:<\/strong> It supports<strong> diverse wetland-associated vegetation, including the sacred lotus (<em>Nelumbo nucifera<\/em>) and the wild sugarcane (<em>Saccharum spontaneum<\/em>).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These habitats <strong>provide nesting and breeding sites, as well as shelter and food resources, for a variety of animal species. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>particularly important for waterbirds, regularly supporting more than 30,000 individuals,<\/strong> and has been <strong>designated as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) by Birdlife International.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Notable<strong> waterbird species recorded at the Site include the vulnerable sarus crane (<em>Grus antigone<\/em>) and greater spotted eagle (<em>Clanga clanga<\/em>).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Note \u2013<\/strong><\/span> The designation of this site under the Ramsar Convention takes the <strong>total number of such wetlands in India to 103.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Saman Bird Sanctuary<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Saman Bird Sanctuary<\/strong> is located in the<strong> Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0a <strong>seasonal oxbow lake<\/strong> on the <strong>Ganges floodplain.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Area:<\/strong> It spread over<strong> area of about 5.25 sq kms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Establishment:<\/strong> It was <strong>notified as sanctuary<\/strong> in\u00a0<strong>1990.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ramsar site:<\/strong> It was <strong>declared Ramsar Site<\/strong> in <strong>2019.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> Vulnerable species including<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sarus-crane-and-all-india-sarus-crane-survey\/\"> sarus crane (<em>Grus antigone<\/em>)<\/a> and greater spotted eagle (<em>Aquila clanga<\/em>) are also found.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Several species of migratory birds like the <strong>common teal, northern pintail, great white pelican and species of storks are also found here.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>resident population of storks<\/strong> <strong>includes painted stork, black-necked stork, open-billed stork and woolly-necked stork.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India\u2019s Ramsar site tally has reached 103 with the addition of Sukhna Wetland (Chandigarh) and Sauj Jheel (UP).
