{"id":374080,"date":"2026-10-19T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-19T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=374080"},"modified":"2026-10-19T14:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T09:00:00","slug":"indias-nutrient-rich-purple-potato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-nutrient-rich-purple-potato\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Nutrient-Rich Purple Potato"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-box-green\">\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The development of nutrient-rich purple potato varieties in India highlights efforts to improve nutritional quality and address hidden hunger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About India\u2019s Nutrient-Rich Purple Potato<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_374090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-374090\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-374090\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB-6.jpg?resize=377%2C358&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kufri Jamunia\" width=\"377\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB-6.jpg?resize=300%2C285&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Source-PIB-6.jpg?w=705&amp;ssl=1 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-374090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Indian Council of Agricultural Research\u2013Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI)<\/strong> has developed <strong>three coloured potato varieties <\/strong>through biofortification.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kufri Neelkanth (2018)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kufri Manik (2021) <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Kufri Jamunia (2024)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>This type of biofortification aims <strong>to improve the nutrient content of crops through plant breeding and strengthen long-term nutritional security.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Different varieties developed are:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kufri Jamunia (2024):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> It has <strong>dark-purple skin and flesh, oblong tubers, shallow eyes and a mealy texture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutritional Value:<\/strong> It contains higher levels of <strong>ascorbic acid, anthocyanin and carotenoids than Kufri Manik and Kufri Neelkanth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mineral Content:<\/strong> Its <strong>flesh <\/strong>contains<strong> 22.77 ppm zinc <\/strong>and<strong> 32.23 ppm iron.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Yield and Storage:<\/strong> It produces<strong> 32\u201335 tonnes per hectare <\/strong>under recommended cultivation practices.\n<ul>\n<li>It also has <strong>good storage quality, with low rottage and minimal weight loss.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultivation Suitability: <\/strong>It has shown stable performance in <strong>multi-location trials and is recommended for cultivation in the North Indian plains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Uses:<\/strong> It can be used to <strong>prepare curries, parathas, halwa and dosa. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also suitable for making<strong> processed food products.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kufri Neelkanth (2018):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It was the <strong>first purple-skinned specialty potato variety.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutritional Value:<\/strong> It has a <strong>high antioxidant content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultivation:<\/strong> It is suitable for <strong>Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Suitability:<\/strong> It is <strong>suitable for people of all age groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kufri Manik (2021):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> It produces <strong>round, deep-red tubers with yellow flesh and medium-sized eyes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutritional Value:<\/strong> It contains <strong>high levels of anthocyanin, zinc and iron.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The development of nutrient-rich purple potato varieties in India highlights efforts to improve nutritional quality and address hidden hunger.
