{"id":37467,"date":"2018-11-23T18:18:56","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T12:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=37467"},"modified":"2018-11-23T18:18:56","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T12:48:56","slug":"greenhouse-gas-amounts-in-atmosphere-hit-record-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/greenhouse-gas-amounts-in-atmosphere-hit-record-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenhouse gas amounts in atmosphere hit record high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/greenhouse-gases-maharashtra-drought-5460146\/\"><strong>Greenhouse gas amounts in atmosphere hit record high<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in its latest Greenhouse Gas Bulletin reported that the amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have hit yet another record high.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>About WMO: <\/strong>The WMO is the weather agency of the United Nations, and publishes its Greenhouse Gas Bulletin each year.<\/li>\n<li>This year\u2019s report covers data for 2017.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Findings of the report:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>There is<strong> no sign of a reversal <\/strong>in the trend of rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is driving long-term climate change, sea level rise, ocean acidification and more extreme weather.<\/li>\n<li>Without <strong>rapid cuts <\/strong>in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, climate change will have increasingly destructive and irreversible impacts on life on Earth.<\/li>\n<li>The last time the Earth experienced a comparable concentration of carbon dioxide was 3-5 million years ago, when the temperature was 2-3\u00b0C warmer and sea level was 10-20 metres higher than now.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carbon dioxide<\/strong>: Concentrations of the gas reached 405.5 parts per million in 2017, 146% of the pre-industrial era (before 1750).<\/li>\n<li>The increase in carbon dioxide from 2016 to 2017 was about the same as the average growth rate over the last decade.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>smaller than the record leap<\/strong> observed from 2015 to 2016 (from 401.1 ppm to 403.3 ppm) under the influence of a strong <strong>El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There was no El Ni\u00f1o in 2017.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Methane<\/strong>: Atmospheric methane reached a new high of about 1859 parts per billion in 2017 and is now 257% of the pre-industrial level.<\/li>\n<li>Its rate of increase was about equal that observed over the past decade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nitrous Oxide<\/strong>: Its atmospheric concentration in 2017 was 329.9 parts per billion. This is 122% of pre-industrial levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CFC-11: <\/strong>CFC-11 is a potent greenhouse gas and a stratospheric ozone depleting substance regulated under the Montreal Protocol.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2012, its rate of decline has slowed to roughly two-thirds of its rate of decline during the preceding decade.<\/li>\n<li>The most likely cause of this slowing is increased emissions associated with production of CFC-11 in eastern Asia according to the bulletin says.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37452\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/carbon.jpg?resize=473%2C192&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/carbon.jpg?w=473&amp;ssl=1 473w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/carbon.jpg?resize=150%2C61&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/carbon.jpg?resize=300%2C122&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greenhouse gas amounts in atmosphere hit record high News: The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in its latest Greenhouse Gas Bulletin reported that the amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have hit yet another record high.
