ICAR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Exercise \u2018VAJRA-SAT\u2019<\/strong> was a<strong>\u00a0National Tabletop Exercise<\/strong> on <strong>Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) serotype SAT-1 preparedness<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FMD serotype SAT-1 <\/strong>has<strong> not been reported in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In view of its <strong>geographical spread beyond Africa to parts of West Asia<\/strong>, the exercise was <strong>undertaken as a proactive preparedness initiative<\/strong> to safeguard livestock health, farmers&#8217; livelihoods and the livestock economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organised by:<\/strong> The <strong>Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD)<\/strong>, in coordination with the <strong>Indian Council of Agricultural Research\u2013National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (ICAR-NIVEDI), Bengaluru.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It aimed to <strong>strengthen national preparedness and coordinated responses to transboundary animal diseases.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Theme:<\/strong> The theme was \u201c<strong>Detect Early, Confirm Fast, Contain Together.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Participants:<\/strong> It brought <strong>together 83 participants from 25 States and 3 Union Territories<\/strong>, along with <strong>national institutions, veterinary laboratories, universities, vaccine manufacturers and defence and border guarding agencies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Simulated Outbreak Scenarios:<\/strong> Participants discussed early detection, laboratory confirmation, epidemiological investigation and animal movement control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preparedness Measures:<\/strong> The exercise <strong>focused on emergency vaccination, risk communication, disease surveillance and coordinated responses.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Recommendations:<\/strong> It highlighted the need for <strong>timely reporting, rapid diagnosis, vaccine readiness and inter-State coordination.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"red-h2-box\">About Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_375281\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-375281\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-375281\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Source-Springer.jpg?resize=300%2C285&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Source-Springer.jpg?resize=300%2C285&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Source-Springer.jpg?resize=768%2C728&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Source-Springer.jpg?w=931&amp;ssl=1 931w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-375281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; Springer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>highly contagious viral disease<\/strong> affecting <strong>cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats and pigs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was the <strong>first disease for which the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) established official status recognition.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cause:<\/strong> It is <strong>caused by the FMD virus<\/strong>, which belongs to the <strong>Aphthovirus group.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> It causes <strong>vesicles (blisters) in affected animals and reduces milk yield, growth rate and working capacity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mortality:<\/strong> Most infected <strong>animals survive, but they may remain weak and suffer reduced productivity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission:<\/strong> It spreads through <strong>infected animals, their secretions and excretions, respiratory and oral routes, contaminated meat, dairy products, equipment and clothing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vaccine:<\/strong> Vaccine for <strong>foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is called Futvac.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Human Risk:<\/strong> It is an <strong>animal disease and does not pose a human health or food safety threat<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>different from hand, foot and mouth disease in children.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact:<\/strong> It leads to reduction in milk yield, decreased growth rate, infertility, reduced working capacity in bullocks, and a trade embargo in the international market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control:<\/strong> Control of FMD <strong>can be achieved by mass vaccination<\/strong> of susceptible livestock repeatedly at regular intervals till the incidence of the disease comes down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying organised Exercise \u2018VAJRA-SAT\u2019 to strengthen preparedness against FMD serotype SAT-1.
