conference, Assam and Mizoram are the most vulnerable to climate change among the Himalayan states.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Important Facts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>About the Study:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12 western and eastern Himalayan states were studied on various parameters crucial for adaptation to climate change such as irrigated area, per capita income (for 2014-15), area under crop insurance, forest cover and the extent of slopes<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Highlights of the Study:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Assam <\/strong>has the <strong>highest <\/strong>vulnerability because:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It has one of the lowest areas under irrigation and lowest forest area per 1,000 rural households among the states assessed<\/li>\n<li>It has lowest per capita income<\/li>\n<li>Lowest area under crop insurance<\/li>\n<li>Relatively low participation in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Guarantee Scheme (The schemes provides 100 days of unskilled employment to at least one adult member of every poor rural household)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Mizoram (ranked 2nd)<\/strong> is highly vulnerable because of the same issues faced by Assam and because 30% of its geographical area is under slope.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong> has <strong>third highest<\/strong> vulnerability primarily because:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>has no area under crop insurance<\/li>\n<li>least road density<\/li>\n<li>low percentage of area under horticulture crops<\/li>\n<li>low livestock to human ratio<\/li>\n<li>low percentage of women in the overall workforce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Sikkim <\/strong>has performed the best with <strong>lowest vulnerability<\/strong> as<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It has the highest per capita income among the 12 states assessed,<\/li>\n<li>good coverage of dense forests<\/li>\n<li>large area under orchards<\/li>\n<li>low population
