Centre approves Shahpurkandi Dam project on river Ravi in Punjab<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of Shahpurkandi dam project on the Ravi river in Punjab<\/p>\n

Important Facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. The project would be implemented by Govt. of Punjab with Central Assistance\u00a0and is expected to be completed by 2022<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Benefits from the project:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. It would help minimising some of the water of the River Ravi which at present is going waste through the Madhopur Headworks downstream to Pakistan.<\/li>\n
    2. On completion of the project an Irrigation Potential of 5,000 ha in Punjab State and 32,173 ha in J&K State would be created.<\/li>\n
    3. The project is expected to deliver electricity and irrigation worth Rs 850 crore annually and to fully utilize the Ravi water as per the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan<\/li>\n
    4. The project will enable the upstream Ranjit Sagar Dam project electricity station to act as a peaking station, besides having its own generation capacity of 206 MW.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Indus Water Treaty<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

      1. Indus Waters Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 for sharing of Indus waters.<\/li>\n
