It is located in the Bishupur District of Manipur.<\/li>\n<li>The most unique feature of the Loktak lake is the presence of a series of floating islands locally known as phumdis. These are massive heterogeneous masses of soil, vegetation and organic matter in different stages of\u00a0decomposition<\/li>\n<li>Keibul Lamjao National Park located at the south western part of the lake. It is home to the endangered Manipuri brow-antlered deer, Sangai.<\/li>\n<li>Loktak Lake was designated for the List of Wetlands of International Importance (Under Ramsar Convention) in 1990.<\/li>\n<li>In 1993 it was inscribed in the Montreux Record of sites whose ecological character has changed, is changing, or is about to change as a result of human interference.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38903\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/map.png?resize=435%2C370&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/map.png?w=435&amp;ssl=1 435w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/map.png?resize=150%2C128&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/map.png?resize=300%2C255&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Threats to Loktak Lake:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Waste products from towns and cities and sediments brought by the rivers to the lake is a major concern<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;floating huts&#8221; or &#8220;phumshang&#8221; built by local fishermen have disrupted the environment of the lake by polluting and shallowing the lake<\/li>\n<li>introduction of new and alien species in the 1980s by Government of Manipur has led to loss of indigenous species of the Lake<\/li>\n<li>Detergents, soaps and other phosphates and nitrates containing chemicals, which are brought down by the rivers to this lake, cause \u2018eutrophication\u2019 of the lake<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>Issues faced by local communities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Due to environmental degradation, there has been continuous decline in fish species which have impacted the livelihood of fishermen community of Loktak.<\/li>\n<li>Another major challenge for Loktak Lake dwellers has been eviction after the enactment of Loktak Protection Act, 2006.
