{"id":39916,"date":"2019-01-05T17:38:29","date_gmt":"2019-01-05T12:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=39916"},"modified":"2019-01-05T17:38:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-05T12:08:29","slug":"andhra-unveils-second-largest-rock-art-trove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/andhra-unveils-second-largest-rock-art-trove\/","title":{"rendered":"Andhra unveils second largest rock art trove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PT Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/andhra-pradesh\/aps-second-largest-treasury-of-rock-art-in-kurnool\/article25913937.ece\">Andhra unveils second largest rock art trove<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andhra unveils second largest rock art trove<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Andhra Pradesh\u2019s second largest petroglyph site, containing about 80 petroglyhs, has been discovered at Mekala Benchi in Kurnool district<\/li>\n<li>Mekala Benchi has petroglyphs dating back from the <strong>Neolithic to the Megalithic period<\/strong>, Kandanathi carvings range from the prehistoric to the historic period.<\/li>\n<li>These petroglyphs, or rock carvings, become a major site of Neolithic settlements in south India.<\/li>\n<li>Two boulders, one known locally as \u2018Boodida Konda\u2019 (ash-coloured hill) and the other an unnamed granite hillock, mostly have images of bulls or bull-riding, in addition to human figures, an elephant, tiger-like animals and cupules.<\/li>\n<li>The current archeological site, at the granite foothills of Boodida Konda, could possibily a Neolithic settlement,<\/li>\n<li>Kandanathi, with 200 petroglyphs, is also in Kurnool district.<\/li>\n<li>The present day Gollas and Kurubas (grazing communities), who are predominant in this region, are the living examples of the first pastoralists who resembles Neolithic people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are Petroglyphs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammer stone.
