{"id":40020,"date":"2019-01-08T17:58:08","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T12:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=40020"},"modified":"2019-01-08T17:58:08","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T12:28:08","slug":"leprosy-is-no-longer-a-ground-for-divorce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/leprosy-is-no-longer-a-ground-for-divorce\/","title":{"rendered":"Leprosy is no longer a ground for divorce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/lok-sabha-passes-bill-to-remove-leprosy-as-ground-for-divorce\/article25931933.ece\"><strong>Leprosy is no longer a ground for divorce<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lok Sabha has passed The Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Important Facts<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The bill seeks to remove leprosy as a ground for divorce in five personal laws \u2013 Hindu Marriage Act, Dissolution of Muslim Marriages Act, Divorce Act (for Christians), Special Marriage Act and the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>Rationale behind the amendment:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Leprosy as ground for divorce is a \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d provision for a disease that is now curable.<\/li>\n<li>The Human Rights Commission and judgements of various courts had also underlined the need to amend the laws to remove this discrimination.<\/li>\n<li>The Law Commission in its report had also recommended repealing laws and provisions which were discriminatory against leprosy-affected people.<\/li>\n<li>Further, India is a signatory to a UN Resolution which calls for the elimination of discrimination against persons suffering from leprosy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leprosy is no longer a ground for divorce News Lok Sabha has passed The Personal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
