This proposal is a part of 100-day roadmap document for Indian\n Railways submitted to the Prime Minister.<\/li><li>The\n campaign is intended to reduce passenger subsidy on Indian Railways.\n According to Indian railways, it recovers only 53% of the cost incurred\n from the passenger transport business.<\/li><li>Previously\n in 2015, the government had launched Give It Up campaign to motivate LPG\n users who can afford to pay the market price for LPG to voluntarily\n surrender their LPG subsidy.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/deem-bill-pending-in-rs-as-lapsed-m-venkaiah-naidu\/article28103037.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Deem Bill pending in RS as lapsed: M. Venkaiah Naidu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Expressing\n concerns over the pendency of bills, Vice President and Rajya Sabha\n Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu has suggested that any bill pending for more\n than five years in the Rajya sabha should be considered lapsed.<\/li><li>He\n has also called for a debate on the rule that provides for automatic\n lapsing of any bill passed by the Lok Sabha but pending in the Rajya Sabha\n with the dissolution of the Lok Sabha.<\/li><li>Under\n the provisions of Article 107 of the Indian Constitution, bills that are\n introduced in the Rajya Sabha and are pending there do not lapse with the\n dissolution of the Lok Sabha.<\/li><li>However,\n bills passed by the Lok Sabha during the course of its five-year term and\n pending in the Rajya Sabha get lapsed with the dissolution of the Lok\n Sabha.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-halts-road-works-through-tiger-reserves\/article28103105.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Supreme Court halts road works through tiger reserves<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Supreme Court has halted further construction of the Kandi road project.\n The Kandi Road Project seeks to connect Ramnagar in Kumaon to Kotdwar in\n Garhwal.<\/li><li>The\n construction of the road has been stopped as it passes through a\n \u201ccritical\u201d corridor between the Rajaji Tiger Reserve and the Corbett Tiger\n Reserve.<\/li><li>The\n stay on Kandi road has come after an interim report was submitted to the\n court on June 19 by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) that advises the\n SC on forest matters. The CEC has observed that the road passes through\n ecologically sensitive area and is being built without the statutory\n approval of the National Board for Wildlife.<\/li><li>The\n Rajaji Tiger Reserve spreads over three districts of Uttarakhand:\n Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. The national park was accorded the\n status of Tiger Reserve in 2015 and became the 48Th tiger reserve in\n India. The Ganga and Song rivers flow through the reserve<\/li><li>Jim\n Corbet National Park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park- the\n first national park in India. It is located in the Nainital district of\n Uttarakhand. The park was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1973- the first to\n come under the Project Tiger initiative.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/12305-crore-disbursed-so-far-to-farmers-under-pm-kisan-scheme\/article28099841.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Only one in four received PM-KISAN money<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Union Agriculture Minister has said that only one in four of the intended\n beneficiaries have received income support from the PM-Kisan scheme so\n far. The reason cited for the delay is a long verification process for\n selecting beneficiaries.<\/li><li>The\n central government has thus announced that farmers will get benefits\n retrospectively from the time their names are uploaded in the database,\n rather than from the time their details are verified.<\/li><li>The\n PM KISAN scheme was announced in the interim Budget 2019-20. The scheme seeks\n to a) provide assured supplemental income to the most vulnerable farmer\n families b) meet farmers emergent needs especially before the harvest\n season.<\/li><li>Initially,\n the scheme sought to provide an income support of Rs 6,000\/annum to small\n and marginalised farmers. The amount is to be transferred directly to the\n bank account of the beneficiaries in 3 equal instalments.<\/li><li>However,\n recently, the Union Cabinet has approved to extend the ambit of the PM\n Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana to cover all land holding eligible farmer\n families (subject to the prevalent exclusion criteria) irrespective of the\n size of land holdings.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/human-trafficking-within-borders-especially-challenging-issue-us-report\/article28093804.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Human trafficking within borders especially challenging issue: U.S. report<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n USA has retained India in Tier 2 list of countries in 2019 Trafficking in\n Persons (TIP) report.<\/li><li>The\n report categorises countries into three groups based on the Trafficking\n Victims Protection Act (TVPA). The TVPA is a US legislation that requires\n an annual report from the State Department on status of human trafficking\n in countries across the world<\/li><li>Tier\n 2 is for those countries whose governments do not fully meet TVPA\u2019s\n minimum standards but are making significant efforts to bring themselves\n into compliance with those standards. Examples: Brazil, Indonesia,\n Pakistan, Italy, India.<\/li><li>Tier\n 3 countries are those countries which do not fully meet the minimum\n standards for the elimination of trafficking and are not making any\n efforts to do so. Russia, China, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, Syria,\n South Sudan, Cuba, Saudi Arabia are among 21 countries in the Tier 3.<\/li><li>Tier\n 1 Countries whose governments fully comply with the TVPA\u2019s minimum\n standards. Examples, USA, Australia, Japan, Spain<\/li><li>According\n to the report, 77% of the cases, victims are trafficked within their own\n countries of residence, rather than across borders. It also adds that\n victims of sex trafficking were more likely to be trafficked across\n borders while victims of forced labour were typically exploited within\n their own countries<\/li><li>For\n India, the report has observed that government of India does not fully\n meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it\n is making significant efforts to do so.<\/li><li>The\n report has also highlighted Indian government\u2019s failure in this regard.\n For example, the report highlights that systemic failure to address forced\n labour and sex trafficking in government-run and government-funded shelter\n homes remained a serious problem.<\/li><li>The\n report has recommended India to a) amend the definition of trafficking in\n Section 370 of the Indian Penal Code to include forced labour trafficking,\n b) establish Anti-Human Trafficking Units in all districts with dedicated\n funding and clear mandates.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/indias-nsg-membership-not-on-kazakhstan-meeting-agenda-says-china\/article28098118.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">India\u2019s NSG membership not on Kazakhstan meeting agenda,says China<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>China\n has stated that the issue regarding India\u2019s entry into the Nuclear\n Suppliers Group(NSG) was not on the agenda of the plenary of the NSG that\n concluded in Nur-Sultan formerly known as Astana, Kazakhstan.<\/li><li>China\n has been firm on its stand that only those countries which have signed the\n Non-Proliferation Treaty(NPT) should be allowed to enter the organisation.<\/li><li>China\n has been objecting over the issue ever since India applied for the\n membership of the NSG in May 2016.<\/li><li>India\n and Pakistan are not signatories of the NPT. After India\u2019s application\n ,Pakistan too has applied for the NSG membership in 2016.<\/li><li>China\n had earlier called for a two-step plan to admit countries like India\n (a)first NSG members arrive at a set of principles for the entry of\n non-NPT states and (b)then move forward discussions of specific cases.<\/li><li>The&nbsp;<strong>NPT<\/strong>&nbsp;is\n an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of\n nuclear weapons and weapons technology to foster the peaceful uses of\n nuclear energy, and to further the goal of disarmament.<\/li><li>Nuclear-weapon\n states parties under the NPT are defined as those that manufactured and exploded\n a nuclear weapon or other nuclear explosive device before January 1,1967.<\/li><li>India\n did not sign it as the treaty was discriminatory. India argued that\n treaties like NPT were selectively applicable to only non-nuclear powers\n and legitimized the monopoly of nuclear power by a few.<\/li><li><strong>NSG<\/strong>&nbsp;is\n a group of nuclear supplier countries that seeks to contribute to the\n non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of\n guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear-related exports.<\/li><li>The\n aim of the NSG is to ensure that nuclear trade for peaceful purposes does\n not contribute to the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The grouping has\n 48 participating governments and the European Commission acts as an\n Observer.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/operation-bandar-code-name-of-balakot-strike\/article28102928.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Operation Bandar, code name of Balakot strike<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>According\n to defence sources, the Indian Air Force mission to bomb a terrorist\n hideout in Pakistan\u2019s Balakot was codenamed \u2018Operation Bandar\u2019 (monkey).<\/li><li>The\n Army, in turn, code-named its heightened operational alert and increasing\n defences along the border to address a possible Pakistan retaliation to\n air strike as \u201cOperation Zafran\u201d<\/li><li>On\n February 26<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;2019, India conducted cross-border airstrike\n to destroy terrorist camp run by the Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot, a town\n located in the Pakistan\u2019s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.<\/li><li>India\n had termed the airstrike an \u201cintelligence-led, non-military, pre-emptive\u201d\n operation<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/fresh-triple-talaq-bill-introduced-in-lok-sabha-amid-opposition-protest\/article28097311.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Amid protests, triple talaq Bill introduced<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n government has introduced The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on\n Marriage) Bill, 2019, also known as the Triple \u2018talaq\u2019 Bill in the Lok\n Sabha.<\/li><li>The\n government promulgated an ordinance on triple talaq in September 2018 and\n February 2019. This is because the bill though passed in Lok Sabha\n remained pending in the Rajya sabha.<\/li><li>The\n ordinance declared the practice of triple talaq as void and illegal and a\n cognisable offence. It also prescribed a penalty of up to three years\n imprisonment for an offence. It further provided for subsistence allowance\n to married Muslim women and their children. The new bill is the same as\n the ordinance in force.<\/li><li>In\n August 2017, The Supreme Court of India had held Instant triple Talaq has\n unconstitutional.<\/li><li>Triple\n Talaq (Talaq-e-biddat) refers to a practice of divorce under Muslim\n personal laws simply by pronouncing word \u2018talaq\u2019 thrice in one sitting by\n a Muslim man to his wife.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/business\/ministry-of-steel-msme-jwa-narendra-modi-5794053\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Despite MSME objections, govt. moves plan to curb special steel imports<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Ministry of Steel is piloting a proposal to slap quality control\n regulations on tinplate and tin-free steel.<\/li><li>Tinplate\n steel are sheets of steel coated with a thin layer of tin that have\n specialised use in consumer products like cans, hair clips and pens.<\/li><li>The\n proposal mandates domestic and foreign suppliers of these products to\n adhere to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).This could potentially act as a\n non-tariff barrier to curb imports of the material.<\/li><li>These\n measures are being taken despite concerns raised by other arms of the\n government that it may hit a large number of micro, small and medium\n enterprises.<\/li><li>However,\n the government has said that this will not only boost India\u2019s exports but\n will also generate jobs in the manufacturing sector especially the MSME\n sector.<\/li><li>The\n ministry\u2019s Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order,2018, under\n which the new proposal has been moved prohibits manufacturing, import,\n sale, hire and lease of such products unless they conform to relevant\n standards so that no sub-standard products are sold in the country.<\/li><li>These\n items need to bear the BIS mark which means domestic manufacturers have to\n obtain BIS certification mark licences and foreign suppliers to India will\n have to obtain BIS registration.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/telangana\/telangana-cm-chandrashekar-rao-inaugurates-kaleshwaram-project\/article28096471.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Kaleshwaram Lift irrigation project inaugurated<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Kaleshwaram\n Multipurpose Lift Irrigation Project on River Godavari has been\n inaugurated by Telangana Chief Minister. It is being touted as world\u2019s\n largest multi-stage, multi-purpose lift irrigation project.<\/li><li>The\n project is unique because Telangana will harness water at the confluence\n of two rivers with Godavari by constructing a barrage at Medigadda in\n Jayshankar Bhoopalpally district. It would then reverse pump the water\n into the main Godavari River and divert it through lifts and pumps into a\n huge and complex system of reservoirs, water tunnels, pipelines and\n canals.<\/li><li>The\n project will support crop cultivation on 45 lakh acres of land. It will\n also meet the drinking water requirement of 70% of the state and also\n cater to the needs of the industry.<\/li><li>The\n project has set many records. It has world\u2019s longest water tunnels, aqua\n ducts, underground surge pools, and biggest pumps. The longest tunnel is\n 21 kms long connecting Yellampalli reservoir with Medaram reservoir.<\/li><li>The\n total length of Kaleshwaram project is approximately 1,832 kms, of which\n 1,531 kms is gravity canals and 203 kms comprise water tunnels.<\/li><li>There\n are 20 water lifts and 19 pump houses in the project. It has 20 reservoirs\n spread across 13 districts with a total capacity to store 145 TMC.<\/li><li>Lift\n irrigation is a method of irrigation in which water is not transported by\n natural flow but is lifted with pumps or surge pools etc. Till date, the\n biggest lift irrigation projects in the world were the Colorado lift\n scheme in America and the Great Manmade River in Egypt.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/science\/cancer-cell-detection-dots-developed-from-coal-in-assam\/article28077873.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Cancer cell detection \u2018dots\u2019 developed from coal in Assam<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Scientists\n from CSIR-NEIST Assam have developed chemical process that turns dirty\n coal into biomedical carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to help detect cancer\n cells.<\/li><li>Carbon\n Quantum Dots (CQDs) are carbon-based nanomaterials whose size is less than\n 10 nm or nanometre. These carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were produced from\n cheap, abundant, low-quality and high sulphur coals.<\/li><li>The\n CQDs emits a bluish colour with high-stability, good-conductivity,\n low-toxicity, environmental friendliness, and good optical properties.<\/li><li>They\n are used as diagnostic tools for bio-imaging especially in detecting\n cancer cells, for chemical sensing and in opto-electronics.<\/li><li>Scientists\n have said CQDs are futuristic materials whose demand in India has been\n increasing leading to a considerable volume of import.<\/li><li>The\n CSIR-NEIST technology can produce approximately 1 litre of CQDs per day at\n one-twentieth the cost of imported CQDs to become an import substitute.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/news-ani\/indian-navy-launches-operation-sankalp-in-gulf-of-oman-119062001126_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Indian Navy launches Operation Sankalp in Gulf of Oman<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n Indian Navy has launched&nbsp;<strong>Operation Sankalp&nbsp;<\/strong>to safeguard\n its vessels transiting through the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.<\/li><li>The\n Navy has deployed stealth guided missile destroyers INS Chennai and patrol\n vessel INS Sunayna in the region for maritime security operations.\n Besides, aerial surveillance by naval aircraft is also being undertaken.<\/li><li>The\n operation has been launched in the wake of escalating tension in the Gulf\n of Oman where two oil tankers were attacked.<\/li><li>The\n Information Fusion Centre \u2013 Indian Ocean Region(IFC-IOR) is also keeping a\n close watch on the movement of ships in the Gulf region.<\/li><li>The\n IFC has been established in 2018 at the Navy\u2019s Information Management and\n Analysis Centre (IMAC) in Gurugram.<\/li><li>IFC\n is a single point centre linking all the coastal radar chains to generate\n a seamless real-time picture of the nearly 7,500-km coastline.<\/li><li>Through\n this Centre, information on white shipping or commercial shipping is\n exchanged with countries in the region to improve maritime domain\n awareness in the Indian Ocean. White-shipping refers to commercial\n shipping information about the movement of cargo ship.<\/li><li>The\n Gulf of Oman or Sea of Oman is a gulf that connects the Arabian Sea with\n the Strait of Hormuz, which then runs to the Persian Gulf. It borders Iran\n and Pakistan on the north, Oman on the south and the United Arab Emirates\n on the west.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/education\/colleges\/iit-b-tops-indian-institutions-in-qs-world-university-rankings\/article28073936.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">IIT-Bombay tops Indian institutions in QS World University rankings<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n QS World University Rankings 2020 has been released. The Massachusetts\n Institute of Technology(MIT) has topped the rankings for the eighth\n consecutive year.<\/li><li>IIT-Bombay\n has been ranked India\u2019s best university for the second year in a row\n gaining a global ranking of 152.Two other Indian universities namely IIT\n Delhi (182) and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (184) are now\n under 200.<\/li><li>There\n are a total of 23 Indian institutions in the top 1,000.There were 24 in\n last year\u2019s rankings. Out of the 23,nine are in the top 500 including\n seven IITs.<\/li><li>The\n Manipal Academy of Higher Education falls within the 701-750 ranking band\n is the top private university in the country.<\/li><li>QS\n rankings are published annually by global higher education consultancy\n Quacquarelli Symonds. The QS list ranks the world\u2019s top 1,000\n universities.<\/li><li>The\n QS system now comprises the global overall and subject rankings alongside\n five independent regional tables (Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe and\n Central Asia, the Arab Region and BRICS).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pib.nic.in\/newsite\/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=190628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">FM chairs 35th GST Council meeting in Delhi<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\n 35th Goods and Services tax (GST) Council Meeting was held on 21 June 2019\n at New Delhi.<\/li><li>The\n GST council has extended the tenure of the anti-profiteering authority by\n two years and has also imposed a penalty of up to 10% on businesses not\n passing on benefits of rate cuts to consumers.<\/li><li>The\n Council took a decision regarding the location of the State and the Area\n Benches for the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) for\n various States and Union Territories with legislature. It has been decided\n to have a common State Bench for the States of Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur\n and Arunachal Pradesh.<\/li><li>The\n Council has also decided to use Aadhaar as the identity and address proof\n required for registration for GST. No other documents will be required and\n authentication can be done using a one time password.<\/li><li>The\n Council decided to introduce electronic invoicing system in a phase-wise\n manner for business-to-business transactions.<\/li><li>E-invoicing\n would help taxpayers in backward integration and automation of tax\n relevant processes. It would also help tax authorities in combating the\n menace of tax evasion.<\/li><li>Further,\n the council deliberated on the reduction of the tax slab on electric\n vehicles to 5% from 12%,it could not reach the conclusion. The matter of\n GST rate cuts for the electric vehicles was sent to the Fitment Committee\n for further consideration.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-likely-to-raise-terror-financial-crimes-at-g20-summit-in-osaka\/article28103009.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">India likely to raise terror, financial crimes at G20 summit in Osaka<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Prime\n Minister will attend the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan from June 27-29,2019.<\/li><li>The\n theme of the summit is \u201cHuman centred future society\u201d. The summit will\n take up digital economy, artificial intelligence, global health, ageing\n and marine plastic waste as subjects of deliberation.<\/li><li>The\n Government has said that former Union minister Suresh Prabhu would be the\n sherpa for the summit. It provides legal protection from duplication. However, FATF has said that Pakistan will be blacklisted if\n it fails to complete its action plan by October 2019.<\/li><li>Once\n a country is blacklisted, FATF calls on other countries to apply enhanced\n due diligence and counter measures increasing the cost of doing business\n with the country and in some cases severing it altogether.<\/li><li>Pakistan\n has been under the FATF\u2019s scanner since June,2018 when it was put on the\n greylist for terror financing and money laundering risks after an\n assessment of its financial system and law enforcement mechanism.<\/li><li>Further,\n Pakistan was informed that its compliance on 18 of the 27 indicators were\n unsatisfactory and asked it to do more to demonstrate strict action\n against the terrorist groups.<\/li><li>Currently,\n India along with other global powers has been pushing for blacklisting of\n Pakistan as the country has failed to meet international standards in\n combating financial crimes and terror financing.<\/li><li>The\n Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an inter-governmental body\n established in 1989 on the initiative of the G7.It is a \u201cpolicy-making\n body\u201d which works to generate the necessary political will to bring about\n national legislative and regulatory reforms in various areas.
