{"id":50952,"date":"2019-08-06T19:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-08-06T13:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogadmin.forumias.com\/?p=50952"},"modified":"2019-08-06T15:09:05","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T09:39:05","slug":"7-pm-time-to-go-on-a-cruise-6th-august-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/7-pm-time-to-go-on-a-cruise-6th-august-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"7 PM | Time to go on a cruise | 6th August, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Context:<\/strong> potential of cruise\nindustry in India<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u2018Cruise Ships\u2019 are like moving township\nstudded with state of art facilities and variety of recreational activities Cruise\nlines are popularly known as floating resorts which runs through the oceans and\nseas from different home ports to various destinations. <\/li><li>Cruise line offers various packages of\ntour to different beautiful parts of the world in different countries to their\nclients or guest<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Potential of\ncruise industry in India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Vast\ncoastline: <\/strong>India with its vast and beautiful coastline, virgin\nforests and undisturbed idyllic islands, rich historical and cultural heritage,\ncan be a fabulous tourist destination for cruise tourists.<\/li><li>With the Indian economy developing at a\nsteady pace, middle class growing in number and increasingly possessing\ndisposal incomes which could be spent on leisure activities, Indians could also\ntake on cruise shipping in a big way.<\/li><li><strong>Growth:<\/strong> While\nthe growth rate witnessed globally in cruise shipping sector (in terms of\ncruise ship fleet and passengers carried) is in the range of 10% -20%, Indian\ncoastline is not witnessing the same growth pattern. So government has the\nchance to tap the potential<\/li><li><strong>Indian\nocean region:<\/strong> World\u2019s most favorite cruising areas, i.e,\nCarribean, Mediterranean, Alaska and the latest additions in South East Asia\nhave saturated for quite some time. In this backdrop, there is tremendous\nopportunity for Indian Ocean region. <\/li><li>India with its large coastline and\nvaried unspoiled tourist destinations which can all be explored for cruise\nshipping by visiting any of our sea-ports makes it an ideal place for marketing\ncruise shipping\/tourism to both domestic and international clients.<\/li><li><strong>Economic\nbenefits:<\/strong>\nIt is estimated that on an average a cruise tourist spends about US$ 200-300, a\ncruise staff\/officer spend about US$ 100-150 per port visit. Besides, a vibrant\n\u2018Cruise Shipping\u2019 sector has a number of spin-off effects in Service sector. <\/li><li>Present workforce of India is growing\nexponentially; to tap the workforce cruise sector is better opportunity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Problems facing\nby cruise industry in India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Despite the inherent advantages\/economic\nbenefits and tremendous potential of \u2018Cruise Shipping\u2019 sector, the country has\nnot witnessed any worthwhile growth, as compared to the growth witnessed in\nLatin America and South East Asia in this segment.<\/li><li><strong>Absence\nof Indian cruise flag vessels:<\/strong> Presently no Indian Shipping\nLine owns any luxury cruise liner. Policy dispensation being prescribed vide\nthis document is expected to lead to Indian flag cruise liners becoming a\nreality in not so distant future. <\/li><li><strong>Immigration\nproblems:<\/strong>\nCruise tourism is a leisure activity involving disembarkation of a large number\nof tourists (1000 \u2013 2000 at a time) at the ports of call. Delays on account of\nimmigration formalities not only spoil the mood of the tourists but also give\nnegative publicity to the country as a whole. Hence it is imperative that\nimmigration formalities are completed quickly and with ease. <\/li><li><strong>Quarantine\nissues:<\/strong>\nIndian Port Health Rules 1955 govern quarantine restrictions for passenger\nships, cargo ships as well as cruise ships. Diseases, which come under the\npurview of these Rules for the purpose of quarantine restrictions, are Cholera,\nPlague and Yellow Fever. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Areas for\nimprovements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Develop\ngood infrastructure at identified Ports:<\/strong> Create\ndedicated cruise terminals at Mumbai, Cochin and Goa,Upgrade port facilities at\nexotic locales like Lakshadweep &amp;Andamans and Chennai,create dedicated\ncruise terminals at Chennai, Mangalore and Tuticorin, explore potential of\nother ports like Porbandar &amp;Kandla in the West Coast: and Vishakapatnam,\nCalcutta &amp; Paradeep in the East Coast<\/li><li><strong>Dedicated\nterminals would need to address security concerns and facilitation:<\/strong>\nCruise Terminals located within Cargo Port area create security issues. In\ncreating dedicatedterminals, this aspect has to be addressed and resolved. Also\nhospitality related aspects to enablethe necessary facilitation services to the\ncruise tourists would have to be built into the cruiseterminal development\nplans.<\/li><li><strong>Terminal\nPlans would need to be developed in consultation with key players:<\/strong> In\nfinalizing the cruise terminal development plan, inputs from cruise lines, tour\nagents, and developers would ensure that the concerns of the key stakeholders\nare adequately addressed. This would ensure the long term success of the\nterminal<\/li><li><strong>Initiate\nFeasibility Studies: <\/strong>Feasibility studies for individual\ncruise terminals would need to take into account the port specific\ndevelopmental aspects duly incorporating capital cost towards dredging based on\ngeographical features of the concerned port, land acquisition costs etc<\/li><li><strong>Make\ncruise terminals into destinations by themselves:<\/strong> Cruise\nterminals represent the entry point of the cruise tourists into various tourism\nlocations. Besides offering the facilities and amenities that would be\nessentially from the point of view of tourist facilitation, it would be an\nimportant strategy to make the cruise terminals themselves into mini tourism\ndestinations much like a tourist village showcasing India\u2019s art and\nhandicrafts.<\/li><li>And ethnic bazaars, a small museum\noffering a bird\u2019s eye view of the tourist attractions of the region, food\nstalls with typical Indian cuisine, children\u2019s play area etc. In addition to\nbeing an effective promotional medium of the country\u2019s brand it would also\nincrease the commercial and business potential of the terminal making it more\namenable for private sector participation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Way forward: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>India being is one of the top most\ndestinations for travel sport for domestic and international cruise tourists.\nCruise Tourism is becoming an increasingly popular leisure choice in India. <\/li><li>Cruises, which were at one time\nconsidered the prerogative of the rich, are today fast reaching to all class of\ntravelers.
