Let\u2019s learn from\nthem.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India\u2019s\nPopulation: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At present, India\u2019s\npopulation stands at nearly 134 crore while&nbsp;China&nbsp;is\ninhabited by nearly 140 crore. <\/li><li>India\u2019s population has stressed its\ninfrastructure, its natural resources and its administrative and educational\ncapacity. <\/li><li>However, the future trends show a\ndecline in the population growth in India.<\/li><li>As per the Economic Survey 2018-19, India is set to\nwitness a sharp slowdown in population growth in the next two decades. Although\nthe country as a whole will enjoy the \u201cdemographic dividend\u201d phase, some states\nwill start transitioning to an ageing society by the 2030s.<\/li><li>According to UN\u2019s Population division projections,\nthe number of Indians under the age of 5 peaked in 2007. The number under 15\npeaked in 20111 and is now declining. The current generation of under 25 will\nbe the largest ever.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Total Fertility Rate (TFR): <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The total fertility\nrate in a specific year is defined as the total number of children that would\nbe born to each woman if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years\nand give birth to children in alignment with the prevailing age-specific\nfertility rates.<\/li><li>It is calculated by\ntotalling the age-specific fertility rates as defined over five-year intervals.<\/li><li>Assuming no net\nmigration and unchanged mortality, a total fertility rate of 2.1 children per\nwoman ensures a broadly stable population.&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India\u2019s\nTFR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The government\u2019s Sample Registration\nSystem in 22 states shows that TFR for India declined to 2.2 in 2017 after\nbeing stable at 2.3 between 2013 and 2016.<\/li><li>The total fertility rate has more than\nhalved in both urban and rural areas.<\/li><li>The southern\nstates, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal and Maharashtra now have\nfertility rates well below the replacement rate. <\/li><li>TFR in Bihar,\nUttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are above\nthe replacement rate but are also experiencing significant declines.<\/li><li>As a result,\nthe national TFR is expected to be below replacement level by 2021 (adjusted\nfor the skewed gender ratio, it may already be there).<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"621\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogadmin.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/aa.jpg?resize=517%2C621&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51454\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reasons\nof falling TFR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Higher education,\nincreased mobility, late marriage, financially independent women and overall\nprosperity are all contributing to a falling TFR. <\/li><li>It goes below 2 in both\nurban and rural areas, where girls complete schooling and reduces further as\nthey pass college. <\/li><li>Bihar, with the highest\nTFR of 3.2, had the maximum percentage of illiterate women at 26.8%, while\nKerala, where the literacy rate among women is 99.3%, had among the lowest\nfertility rates. <\/li><li>As more cities come up,\npeople move for jobs and employment tenure gets shorter, TFR may fall further.<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source:\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/opinion\/population-and-patriotism-119082001334_1.html\">https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/opinion\/population-and-patriotism-119082001334_1.html<\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: India\u2019s population and declining total fertility rates.
